Remember that first game you ever got? remember how good it was? annoyed that all the pretenders today are not even half as good?
I think that as we get older we find it harder to enjoy new games, and our nostalgia for old games from yesterdecade grows to compensate. Think about it.
If you can remeber the original tape-format 'barbarian'? (only £4 when released) do you think it was a good game?
Yes!? but why? Its only almost impossible to see black dots hacking at each other in 2 frames of monochrome!
(this can be applied to any pre nintendo games console game)
Think about all the cool 3d wonders of today, why should this dare take such a large area of your mind and free-thinking time?
Whenever I play old games, i tend to think 'hmm....ok, but nowhere near as good as i remembered it.' I bet if you pulled out that old copy of space invaders you would say 'PANTS!' within seconds, but at the moment you think it is the best game in the world.
I still can't shake the feeling that sonic 3 and sonic (my first ever games on a proper console) and knuckles were the best platformers ever...even though technology and gameplay wise mazzer beats'em every time. Why?
I'm not sure. But my guess is that nostalgia is the mind's defense mechanism against depression. If you are a bit bored at the mo, your mind says 'wow, this game/thing was god....' so you got something to remember and be happy about.
What do you guys think?
what are they like now, when you compare them with new games?
I also done the same thing with sensible world of soccer on the Amiga. this game i believe to be one of the best football games ever! and still is!
