On the day the government states that crime is down in the UK, Iíd like to take a moment to consider the importance of ëGrand Theft Auto 3í.
And it is an important game. The ë18í certificate alone will sell hundreds of copies. And Iím sure the guys at ëRock Starí (the publisher) will be thrilled to achieve such a rank. And this is what makes this piece of software so controversial.
The day ëNintendoí release an ë18í certificate game will be the day the company finally realises that adults play video games. The same can be said of ëMicrosoftí. While Bill Gatesí wonder-spin team allow games of a violent nature (ëKing Piní) to run on their systems, I wonder how readily they will endorse an independent product such as ëGTA 3í. It is a crucial time for ëMicrosoftí. This very day, they laid the cards down with the ultra-family-friendly ëWindows XPí. Considering the flack they are receiving in Europe for ëbunglingí together a package that includes competitive software by default, I doubt they will be ready to take on the brave step of producing games designed for adults.
It is a brave step. I imagine, over the next week or two, weíll be hearing about ëDMAísí design for life in media not equipped to cater to gamesí players. And considering it is only a step towards Christmas, Iím sure ëSonyí must be aware of what they have allowed to be created upon their console. I can hear several thousand disappointed kids having their ear bitten off by parents because ëSonyí produces violent games. A complete error. In fact, and in production.
It has always stricken me as remarkable that any child can nip into their local bookstore and purchase ëInvisible Monstersí by Chuck Palahniuk. Does the censorship board believe our children to be thick? Surely, it is only the most imaginative (and those capable of reading such a spectacular novel) children who would enjoy such a literary novel. I have no fears that my ten year-old nephew could play ëGTA3í and become rapidly frustrated due to the level of difficulty and appreciation.
This ten-year-old watches night by night images so distressing in taste on the Six O-clock News. The saving grace of such an explicit programme is our adultís manner of kidding ourselves that they are too young to understand it.
The problem, regarding ëGTA3í, is a problem within, as adults, ourselves.
We recognise that we enjoy something, and unless it is painted in ëDisneyí, we feel it is wrong. Human guilt goes a long way towards making our children feel isolated. Like itís a big, hush, hush secret. Like the life of an adult is something we relish so much that to allow our kids a glimpse into that life is wrong.
What does that say about us?
It says the truth. It states that life isnít ëDisneyí ñ as any child can attest by watching the Six O-clock News. Our society isnít that crisp and clean. So, why penalise adults who choose to make the decision to play a game such as ëGTA3í. Iím not a violent sicko freak who will take what I can do in a fantasy environment into the outside world. (If that was the case, Iíd have been killing and raping and maiming people along time ago ñ just by reading ëThe Lord of the Fliesí and ëOf Mice and Mení at school.
Life isnít ëDisneyí,
And a suitable parody of reality should be embraced and not pushed away.
This is an ë18í certificate game for adults.
That is clear.
As an adult, I demand to be able to play quality games made for adults.
Without all the fuss that wil no doubt accompany ëGrand Theft Auto 3í.

I don't think Nintendo are oblivious to the fact that adults play games... but look at it from their point of view:

Most children play games... I mean what? 7/10 children have one type of consoles or another...? I'd have said so... Now... compare the number of children playing games to the number of adults which i'd have said is no more than 1/10 and you can see where the money is... at the end of the day it is the adults that buy the console, but only one tenth of the adults of the 7/10 children play games... the money is with the children... the only reason Nintendo failed last time was because of the crap launch...

People were wooed by the Playstation so it took off... the N64 took over but then the lack of games killed it...

Nintendo know what they're doing... they're not in the same race as Sony or Microsoft... it is only our bias that has pitted them against each other.

Woah, I'm wrong, wrong, wrong!

Nope, I'm not wrong. There is a difference between 'rated 18' and '18'. Rated as in 'reccomended'. '18' as in certificate.
