Games wise, it hasn't been to bad, for Sony anyway. Wait, before you start, I am only saying this because apart from the GBA, the PS2 is really the only console left. There were a few N64 games released, but due to concentration on the Gamecube, it was unfortunately neglected. Shame that. There were several PSOne games released, but that has now started to fade as well, with games developers and publishers now concentrating more on the PS2.
And of course, the Gameboy Advance was released this year wasn't it, and seems to be going strong, with it already having one of the best and most addictive games of the year in Mario Kart.
So then, what is there to look forward to in the year 2002. Absolutley loads. Theres the release of the Xbox and Gamecube, and more stunning games to be released for the PS2 and GBA. So, let's take a more in depth look.
I'll start with the PS2 as this is the console currently available. It is almost the end to a rather good year for the PS2. After it's rocky launch, it really started buzzing, and has already brought us some of the best games available, namely titles like GT3. But, what do we have to look forward to in the year 2002.
Well games wise, it is looking really good, and it needs to be, with the release of the Xbox and Gamecube. There seem to be tonnes of brilliant games heading the PS2's way in 2002. There is Tomb Raider Next-Gen, which could really shape up to be a superb title. Will is do for the PS2 what the original did for the PSOne, only time will tell. Wait a minute, I'm missing out a game that everybody's waiting for aren't I, Metal Gear Solid 2. Well, I don't really need to say anything about this do I, you've probably heard it all already, and the same goes for Final Fantasy 10 and Tekken 4. Anymore games. Yes, there is Stuntman and The Getaway, two games I am sure that you are all fimiliar with. There are also the likes of: Timesplitters 2, Syphon Filter 4, Headhunter, Turok 4, Onimusha 2, oooo, and Final Fantasy 11. There is quite a hefty list, so I won't go into every single one. I am sure that a magazine has covered this somewhere.
There will also be the internet, which should be up and running next year, so you can play those loverly games over the net. Let's not also forget the Hard Drive aswell. It's quite a busy year for the PS2 next year isn't it.
Okay then, what's next? Aaaah, the Gamecube. Due for release Spring 2002 (March 4th I think), it is set for a collision with the Xbox and PS2. Does it have what it takes to compete? Well, in order to compete, it needs brilliant games, and it seems to have them coming in the bucket loads. There is the talked about Smash Brothers Melee, probably one of the most talked about Gamecube games. It seems to be quite popular, and I can see why as well. It does look really good. And there is also the famous brother Mario and Luigi, each with their own game; Luigi's Mansion and Mario Sunshine. Both look very good indeed. Can two of the most well known gaming characters really make an impact? Judging by the response, I would say so. And I can't forget Zelda can I. It seems that they have taken a different graphical approach to this, but will this pay off. Once again, only time will tell.
And let's not forget the news that startled Sony fans: Resi Evil is only Gamecube from now on. That's interesting. Old games being revamped specially for the Gamecube, as well as completely new Resi Evil games exclusive to the Gamecube. Certainly a twist, isn't it.
I won't leave out Starfox Adventures or Wace Race either, as they both look very good, and if they play as good as they look, they will be brilliant.
And there is also the factor of the internet as well, which will certainly add the multiplayer aspect of the games.
Well, the Gamecube seems set and ready to make a very big impact on Britain, but once again, will it be a big enough impact. The PS2 seems to be getting better every month and the games also look good, and there is also the Xbox. It's certainly going to be interesting.
Last, but certainly not least, is the Xbox. This doesn't seem to be the most famed console now does it? People are putting it down because the either hate Microsoft or Bill Gates or something like that. But, as I am sure you are aware, Bill Gates isn't having much to do with this (as far as I know anyway).
Anyway, on to the matter at hand, can this console really compete with the PS2 and Gamecube. Once again, they need stunning games to compete, and they don't seem to be disappointing in this factor.
You've got Dead or Alive 3, which looks really good, and if it is anything like number 2, it should be brilliant. There are also games like Sega GT 2000, Sega's take on GT3, but can it succeed against such a mighty competitor? The Xbox is also getting a version of Silent Hill 2, with news of loads of extras and graphical enhancements.
And then there is Unreal Championship. I haven't seen that much on this, but from what I have seen, it looks really good. But, it will need to be something really special with the likes of Timesplitters 2 on the PS2 and Perfect Dark Zero on the Gamecube.
Couple these games with internet capabilities, and the Xbox seems set to take on the PS2 and Gamecube in what looks set to be one hell of a battle.
Wait a minute, I forgot about the Gameboy Advance, how silly of me.
Well, there is the follow on from Super Mario Advance, called, yep you guessed it, Super Mario Advance 2. This looks set to be the best version, with Super Mario World being the game getting the special GBA treatment. This is arguably one of the greatest platformers ever, and possibly, one of the best games ever to several people out there. This is probably the game that most GBA owners are waiting for.
And there is also Tekken GBA as well. Can they recreate the playabilty of the PSOne fighter on to the GBA. Well, it looks set to do so, and could be the definitive fighter for the GBA.
And there is Diddy Kong Pilot and Wario Land 4 as well. So next year looks set to be good for the Handheld console world as well.
All in all, next year could be the best year of console gaming ever, with two new consoles and absolutley loads of games. God, we are lucky aren't we.
