Think of a world in which Sega exist as a huge company, back in 2000 December, the Sega Dreamcast took over the PS2 in sales and resulted in Sony quitting the console world, Sony then cut back on games and decide to make them only rarely, this is a world that fortunately doesnít exist, but try and imagine what the consequences would have been if it did.

At the moment, the biggest computer game console around, the giants of the gaming world, failed to compete against Sega. They ask themselves how could they fail after their highly successful Playstation wiped the floor with the Saturn and rubbed hard it in hard. They knew they would win the battle, Sega got the timing all wrong, they planned to release a console that was after their Saturn has flopped, they didnít have enough publicity around it and people just werenít interested in the console.

Would there have been much difference if any if Sega had won the battle of the 32BIT console, would there have been much difference if they won the battle against the Playstation2 for the 128BIT crown? Would it have changed the way we are playing games right now?

If Sega didnít exist in the first place then what would have been the consequence for it today? They realised some of the best consoles for there time and now what did we give them back in return apart from bankruptcy in the console department? Their Mega Drive was one of the best selling consoles and popular that has ever come across to us, and although the might SNES was excellent it couldnít handle the pressure of Sega.

This brings me onto the subject of Nintendo, Iím not biased towards them or anything and I share everyoneís opinion but are they capable of giving us something new? With the 128BIT console world we have already experienced the PS2 and Dreamcast so what will be new if anything? The Graphics are just as capable on each machine and most games are going multi format, the difference is minimal apart from ofcourse the price and possibilities.

The SNES was crushed by the Mega Drive, the N64 was destroyed by the Playstation, a console that was half of itís power, then there is now the GameCube, so after all of the rest of the consoles everyone already knows what they want to get. And I canít see Nintendo standing much of a chance, I feel because of how well it done originally and the price drop Song wonít have much trouble in the latest battle of the consoles.

For Microsoft this is going to be there first console and this will decide whether or not they will carry on or not, maybe even in a few months time I could re write this and say just what could have happened if Microsoft didnít make the X-Box and PS2 won the console wars. Itís a question that I canít answer and is only left to the customers to decide.

Sega now are slowly stopping the arcade machines and concentrating only on games, the games that some of us love and others hate, the games that you might not be playing right now if it hadnít been for Sega.

Thanks for reading

A gaming world dominated by just one company would be devastating, no matter which company it is, it would just be devastating for the gaming world.

Let nature take it's course in the gaming world. Who knows, in years time, we may end up playing on one super console or asking our mates which are they going to be getting next!

I reckon that Sega should have based the Dreamcast's hardware on the Naiomi 2 arcade board instead of the original one. This may have meant a later release date, but the Dreamcast wouldn't have faded out as quick.

Sony was a good thing really.

I think that there was a conspiracy.

The N64 was rushed to be launched early.
Why?
Because of Sony.

So what if there had been no Playstation?

Well the Saturn would've owned the market for atleast 2 years before the N64 came to the shops.
From there, the 64bit machine would blow away EVERYTHING.
And Nintendo would own the market until Sega's next console.

Both companies seemed so relaxed and un competitive.

Both released expensive consoles with exspensive games and went overboard with the hype.

Sensing a conspiracy?

Think about it.

Perhaps Nintendo and Sega made a deal that they'd release their consoles one at a time to claim the market?

Sony gave them the kicking they deserve and taught them a hard lesson about being complacent.

It also brought out the best in both companies as they did their best to better the Playstation with the wonderful Dreamcast and some superb N64 games.

Ofcourse, Sony's PS2 wasn't such a blessing.

It put gaming backwards.

Not incredibly but it pushed back a lot of progress made in the industry. After a year from release, the market is going forward again but the PS2 did stunt it's growth.

It was hard for programmers to make good games on so they had rush make shift games onto the shelves instead.
It was also designed for two players, despite the N64 and Dreamcast both taking games forward with 4 player modes.

It's picking up its pace now but if the Xbox or Gamecube had been released in it's place, or even if it hadn't been released and smothered the wonderful Dreamcast (another bad thing), then the games industry would be much further forward than it is now.

Put it this way, Sony did wonders giving the Games Industry a boost with the PSOne, but did the exact opposite with the PS2.

Sony have done both good and bad.

That's probably true.

WolfHound: I doubt that ANY of the FF games owuld have appeared on carts, especially seeing as FF9 would span a staggering 81 cartridges.

Not likely, as not as much money would've gone into gaming if it wasn't for Sony. Sony made gaming cool, and brought gaming to a new level. The Saturn was already a failure, and the N64 wasn't released for another year or so after the PSX. And as I said, with Sega doing porrly, Nintendo would have become extremely lazy.

And not many games could've been put onto N64, as it used the rather old catridges.

DOH!!!!! I knew this topic would result in a fight, but like they say, if you can't beat them then join them.

I agree with Ant, without Sony then where would we be now? They kicked the gaming industry in the backside with a large boot. It sent it into hyper drive and now look where we are. Thank Sony and don't even think about Nintendo, they've done nothing.
