Allright, ive just had it with this "consoles suck cause there graphics are no better then 640x480" "PC's suck cause there to hard to maintain and they always have to upgrade and the games aren't as fun" Consoles just don't have the game depth as PC's" PC's are to freaking expensive and Windows blow" XBox sucks cause its from Microsoft.....blah blaal balh, ect ect....flame flame, b*tch b*tch..ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ladies and Gentlmen, we are all entitled to our opinion. Thats our God given freedom. But were twisting the facts of both realms of PC"s and Consoles and just simpy not looking in depth at both of their purposes. Let me put this is the most simplest manner.
Think of Consoles as cars..then think of Pc's as ships. Whats the difference, whats the similarity? Well.. cars and ships are both modes of transportation, just how they do it is completely different. Consoles and Pc's are both made for entertainment, *PC games in this case* But they both take different routes to do the same job. Consoles are SPECIFICALLY designed to be used with LOWER resolution TV's. Cathode Ray TV"S have much lower resoultions then computer monitors. Why? TV's are made to be seen from a distance of 3 feet or more..our eyes are unable to detect the lower visual quality as a result of the distance. *don't argue just stick with me* as well as to keep costs down so that the vast majority of the public can afford them. Yes, HDTV is a step up from this, but notice the cost increase. Now, you wouldn't you prefer a nice 32" TV rather then a dwinky 19" Yes.. because your are SUPPOSED to sit farther away then you would a computer monitor. Size matters, it gives a more enjoyable time. A computer monitor is made for a person looking at it 1 foot or less. At this distance, our eyes are able to detect finner details in the picture. Try putting a game say...Quake 3 on 640x480. Looks ugly dont it. But now... step back about 3 to 4 feet away.. Is it as bad now? Nope. But since computers are designed for the user to be up close, Higher resolutions are needed to give the picture a much better claritiy that our eyes agree with. Switch over to 1280x1078 on Quake 3 to see what I mean.
To directly compare PC's to consoles is a bit unfair as you HOPEFULLY can now tell. THe hardware itself is a different matter. Computer are multifuntion machines, desighned for more then games. Hence why there are such countless parts and additions you can add, not even including software. Computers are flexible, they can be upgraded as see fit by the user. Consoles are designed to have a life span of 4-5 years. Yes, there technology gets old while computers continue to evolve. But remember, its two different markets. A company like Nintendo would simply not be able to mass produce continually updated Consoles, the consumer public would grow tired and confused by it, *parents b*tch enough at work about finding out about the Gamecube and GameBoy when they just bought there kids a N64 a few months ago* not to mention the cost for the company *PC's do this well enough*
Because of the difference, is it any wonder why Microsoft is getting so much crap as a result of the xbox? "IT sucks cause its Microsoft, its a computer cause it has a HDD cause PC's have HDD, and PC's suck"
Well, Xbox is the first console to include a HDD, *PS2 not withstanding in the future* The developer wanted to add that extra flexibilit that computers have had for years and consoles havent, to create better and deeper games, as well as allow other function *unlimited game saves and custom background music* PS2 was the first to incorparate DVD, a rabidly increasing market and one with a strong future. Why? Sony belived that developing a multifunction machine would be able to last longer then a stand alone console *one of the reaons anyway* And now that Consoles are just RECENTLY getting into the online world were PC's have been for nearly two decades, the line between them is being hazed. The future of the internet is endless along with its possibitlies. Console companies figured that consoles may do well as internet gaming machines as Pc's have. Dreamcast was the first to try this, *Saturn not withstanding* with fairly succesfull results. But think of this, does the GENERAL consumer, *think, mom and dad* really want a to deal with online consoles and extra costs then have to buy extra stuff to do it *hint, PS2*? Heck, I've worked in retail gaming for over 4 years, and I can tell you, the percentage of people who are willing to get into a console market online is just not very large. This may change in the future, but at the moment, I don't forsee consoles really getting into the online community where PC's realm supreme because as mutlifunction machines, they were designed and adapted to do this in the first place. And until we have fiber optic installed nation wide, for a reasonable price, I can't claim that consoles will have the big impact as multiplayer pc games do. *Remember PC's are multifuntion, they are desinged to do this from the gettgo, consoles haven't only recenlty*
Then we get into the differences in the games. As I said, PC's are multifunction machines with various parts for various operations. Because pc's have a more RAM, HDD space, processing power *so to speak* and the fact the developers of the games for pc's realize the games are for online and single player *mostly* as well as the extra breathing room of HDD and more RAM for bigger levels, enemies, graphics..ect...the games have bit more DEPTH so to speak then consoles. Because of the various components of the pc, we run into the COMPATIBILTY issue that many people cuss PC's for. PC games are designed to run on a varity of differnet equipment, but this doens't always work to well. Once again, the general consumer really doesn't have the patience to learn to figure out how to "add more memory" or "check if 1.4 Gigs of HDD space is available or even find what CPU they have for PC game system requirements. STILL, even now, the people I work with at Wal-Mart electronics still think that you can just throw in a PC game and it will work. It just insn't the case anymore, Because of the increasing gaming market and the push for faster and hotter hardware to run more realistic games, the general consumer just simply cannot keep up with it, while trying to deal with lifes daily issues" Kids, work, projects, community service, bills, house ect ect.. and you can see why the public doen'st grasp computers well for the fact that PC's are complex machines that are CONTINUALLY being updated. For the most part, this is to much for many people, of all ages, and many just dont give a danm. Enter the console. Console games are made for the machine, for one purpose, to play games. To be booted up, and played, pure and simple, on a lower resolution TV. Now im not saying Console games can't have depth *FF is a prime example* but remember, consoles are designed for a span of time and hardware that will not be changed for 4-5 years. And because they lack the same amount of flexible space *HDD and RAM* again*and processing power that pc's do, the developers have to make "slightly less deep" games as a result. "Xbox changing this remains to be seen"
I hope this gives you guys some incite into the fact that console and PC's belong in there own realms with the people enjoy either one from there personally tastes and hobbies and OPINIONS. I personally enjoy both without direclty comparing them because remember, They are two different machines for two different ways of getting to the same destination, and that destination is computer entertaiment.
There will always be consoles and PCs. They satisfy different needs for different people. PC gamers love the on-line play and cheap prices for quality games. Console gamers love the speed and ease of playing and the resources that consoles offer.
I do not want to see a big all-in-one unit. I happily have my PS2 and others downstairs with the TV. I happily have my PC upstairs with my recording equipment and guitars etc.
For now, let sleeping dogs lie and enjoy what both have to offer.
I think that the PC vs. Consoles debate has actually chilled out a lot recently, perhaps a new level of maturity is creeping in? Probably not actually.
But still, though many "PSpoo vs. Gaycube" topics have crept back in, on the whole most people have let the whole PC thing drop. 'Bout time too.
Now, if we can iron out the console debates these forums could be dead by tomorrow lunch time!
