I am fed up of listening to people moaning about whether to buy the latest console or not. People being worried about consoles being out of date are not taking everything into consideration.

FACT : Everything that you buy now, in regards to consoles or PCs, will be out of date in a couple of years. If you want to live continuously at the cutting end of gaming, you have to pay out for it.

As far as I see it you have two choices. Buy it or wait. I bought a Mega Drive ages after they came out. This was because I have a SNES and plenty of decent games. I got it as a bargain from a store with loads of games. When PSX came out, I did not buy it straight away as I was happy playing Mega Drive games which were new to me. After about a year from its release, I bought a PSX. Last year, I bought an N64 quite cheaply and started with those games. In January, I bought a PS2 because I wanted to see the latest games and I wanted a DVD player. Now, Gamecube and X-Box are waiting for us in the wings but I have just bought a Dreamcast, dirt cheap with lots of games. There are plenty of consoles out there with great games. Buy them when you want them, when you can afford them. By the time I have got round to completing all the N64 and Dreamcats games that I like, Gamecube will be cheaper and there will be plenty of games waiting for me.

I know that everyone likes to have the latest things but there is no harm in visiting sections of the gaming world after their prime has passed. Not wanting to advertise, but if you go into a Special Reserve shop these days, you can find some games for the Dreamcast at amazing prices considering the technology that you are using. Explore them all.

So, that is my moaning for today over. I know that a lot people will now desend on me, telling me my Dreamcast is not worth peanuts and that Gamecube will be the Dogís preverbials. I cannot wait for Gamecube either. But, I will get to it all in good time.

Thanks Wookie. PCs are horribly expensive when you consider how long that they are top spec for. My tip is to always buy one with the latest motherboard. A couple of years ago, I bought a 450Mhz PIII. I have just upgraded by buying a 750Mhz processor which fits my board. Not quite as fast as todays models but quick enough to do most. Graphics cards are fastly becoming the biggest rip-off. The latest 3D Prophets are mega expensive.

Well said, that man! (Or is that a-man?)

Personally, I am one of those who will buy new hardware as soon as it's available, *if* it appeals to me enough.

I'd never owned any console before I got my PlayStation just after it was launched. (I'd had a Gameboy and a Game Gear, but I don't see those as 'real' consoles.)

When PS2 was announced, it really appealed to me, so I had to have one on launch day - not just for the sake of having the machine and showing of, but because I actually wanted it. The Gamecube also appeals, though not as much as the PS2 did - so I will have a 'cube, but probably not until some months after it's launched.

It was slightly different with my PC - state of the art just a few months ago, I can now get a higher spec machine for hundreds of pounds less; but at the time I had components added just for the sake of it.

So I can see both sides of the coin. If you can get buy without something for a little longer, you can save a lot of money.

There's also a clear difference between having something just because it's the latest, and having something because you actually *want* it.

I bet, if they're honest, a number of people here got a PS2 - or will be getting a Gamecube or Xbox - at launch, purely because they must have the latest machine - not because they actually want or need it.
