That's the question on all Ninties lips these last few days, (well those that have heard that Nintendo have patented it/ got it trademarked).
It's listed as a musical instrument/ toy and a bunch of other stuff.
Some speculate that this will be Nintendo's answer to Samba De Amigo (sp?) with Pokemon thrown in for good measure, just to get people over the fear factor.
Think back to Spaceworld. Not the last one, but the one before, back in 2000. Remember the Meowth's Party technical demo? Could something similar to that be on the way, a musical playing game, with Pokemon?
Or will it be an accessory to go with the special Pokemon thing that Nintendo revealed at The Nintendo Show? Afterall Nintendo did say there would be other stuff to follow it up.
Whatever it is, it does raise a decent question.
Should you brand something innovative with characters people are already familiar with?
Nintendo have done this an awful lot recently, launching many original games under a 'Mario' name, so people buy it simply because of the familiarity.
Look at the success of Mario Kart. Would the entire genre have existed if the game had a bunch of characters we didn't know about? Surely Marios face on the cover helped to sell many, many copies, THEN people realised just how good it was.
And who would have thought about buying what is a board game with mini games, if not for it being called Mario Party?
But then again, it has been said that familiarity breeds contempt, so will the sight of Pokemon on the boxes put off many gamers?
Pokemon seem to be considered as something for the kids, even though the Gameboy games would probably be a bit tough for the younger audience of the cartoons. Does that mean that 'Pikalele' would be given a nice easy level for the little kids, that can barely even say 'Pokemon' but their eyes light up at the sight of Pikachu?
If it is anything like Samba, it could really cause the musical games scene to kick off, but the sales would initially be down to Pokemon, not the game concept.
Would Samba De Amigo have sold better if called Sonic de Amigo?
Will you buy 'Pikalele'?
Games are all about the 'name' in general thats why people are slightly worried about no Mario game accompaning the GC launch and is also a reason to why some say the X-Box dosn't stand much chance with no establised characters or familiar titles, a reason why the deal with Sega was made?
Anyway, as for Pokemon if it was accompanying some new musical game it would make it instantly popular and would give a nice boost in sales to let people realise it's greatness.
1) Because I might not get a GameCube
2) I have ceased liking PokÈmon after having been virtually force-fed it for 4 years
3) It sounds really poor
1) Because nobody really knows what it is.
2) Because I'm not a fan of Pokemon. Yes, I've played the game. It's fun, for a while.
