A friend of mine told me a while back that Sony have built in a specified lifetime into the PS2. He said it was 15-16 months or after a number of hours use......I thought it was ridiculous until, within the space of the last week, both another friends PS2 and my PS2 suddenly started making terrible noises and within a few days, stopped working altogether.....
We both bought our PS2s last February.....
I've had a lot of use out of it but it's so annoying when it's just a couple of months outside of the guarantee....Has anyone else had a similar problem?.....is the PS2 like the lightbulb....made to fail to sustain demand?!

The watchdog (or was it x-ray) ran aprogram on this last month exactly the same problem, some lawyers even filed a lawsuit against Sony in America because sony was well aware of the prob but did nowt about it.

ps2's can really suck

I wouldn't be suprised. No wait I would. This kind of thin is illegal though so it's really just tripe.

There's a fair few stories about it in the Playsation forum.

Have ou tried opening your PS2 and wiping the dust off the lens gently
