when i put discs in to play them, i hear the disc start to spin around for a few secs followed by a loud 'click', then the disc starts spinning round again, then the click...etc. this happens about three times before there is a 'disc read error'. I hav tried turning the console the other way, pushing the tray in further, but the ps2 only works randomly?! does any1 hav this problem? how can i fix it?

'pushing the tray in further'???

I don't like the sound of this. Once the trays in it's in, it shouldn't move any further. If it does then it sounds like you've knackered the mechanism with all that pushing and pulling!

Around 6 years ago I had the same problem with a 24X speed CD-Rom on my old (then new) PC. I sent the CD-Rom drive back to the suppliers who replaced it with a 32X speed CD-Rom.

Never had the problem again.

It is a common problem in PS2's, the disks u r trying to play are CD, they have a blue back. Alot of old PS2's and i think some new, get this problem after a year.

Sony are even being sued (i think they still r) about it in America.
I think a magazine recodmended a lens cleaner, but i'm not sure.

I had exactly the same problem mate, had to ring Sony up, but they said they couldn’t replace it because it wasn't under warranty no more, so i had to go out and buy a brand new one!

I haven't had this bother with my PS2, but I did have a similar problem with my PS1. Turned out that the laser was buggered.

It may be a problem with the laser, or maybe even scratched discs?

I would try a laser cleaning discs first and see if that helps, if there's no luck then I would just phone Sony.

I had a similar problem with my PS2 i'm not sure what it was but tapping it with my fist a few times did the trick. Alternatively you could phone the helpline or try cleaning the dust out of your PS2

Hope that helps
