Back in the days of the NES, SNES, Master system, and Mega drive there were two companies trying to out do each other by producing lists of games that were enjoyable then and would be enjoyable now. The battle of Sonic and Mario meant that each company were forced into producing high quality titles that were unique to them - sega's daring titles and Nintendo's super playable titles. What we had is two consoles with super quality titles and then along came the PS and immediately bought the quality of gaming to "average". True Sony managed to appeal to the mass market and made their product "cool". However if it was quality titles you wanted then you could look further than Nintendo games (Zelda is a good example)or Sega. With the Dreamcast out, Sega are again proving what a surperb games company it is. With titles such as Shenmue, Jet set radio and Crazy Taxi, Sega are really leading the industry in terms of innovation and fresh ideas. The PS2 as expected is churning out another FIFA game and a bunch of other Average titles that only have better graphics and sound. That doesn't make the game better. Heres hoping that Microsoft can attract the casual gamer market and lift the quality of casual gamer games and then Nintendo can deliver a machine that will be appealing to the third party developers, because no doubt their own first and second party titles will be the best in the next generation wars. Finally lets not forget Sega. While everyone is being attracted to the hype of the PS2 it is Sega that are producing the true next gen titles such as Jet Set Radio and Shenmue. Lets hope lack of third party support doesn't deter them from continuing to bring out innovative games. Replies welcome.
