In this game, Rayman has one simple goal: Defeat the evil pirates from Raymanís world. Sounds simple enough, but it is one tough challenge and completing the game properly takes time, patience and a host of skills. Letís have a look at this ace platformer.
Evil mechanical pirates led by the maniacal Razorbeard are enslaving the population of Rayman's world. It's up to you, the hero, to collect four magical masks that, once united, will awaken a sleeping god who will help Rayman defeat the pirates. Along his quest he'll pick up lums, which are magical fragments of the stars. He'll also free creatures enslaved by the evil pirates and run into a host of friends who will help him achieve his goal. Thatís the plot behind this game.
When you first slam this game into your N64, one of the first things youíll notice is the graphics. Very good. Very crisp and sharp. Rayman moves smoothly throughout the game and inter-acts well with the surrounding world. The characters look stunning and the boss battles are fantastically animated. The game is in full 3-D too. The game makes full use of the Memory expansion- I recommend you one to see the game in itís full glories. I was very impressed with the graphics- sometimes makes you forgot that Rayman is missing a leg and an arm!
The sound is quite perculiar. No character speaks proper English, or not from my English lessons. They seem to have there own language, it goes very well with the characters and is quite comical- you just have to get used to it. The best thing about the sound is the sound effects. Weather it is an exploding bomb or collecting a lum- there is a great sound effect to match- wonderful.
This game is not all jumping around and beating boss butt. No, thereís far more. There are some mind-boggling puzzles for you to solve; they really do make your hair fall out. There is the near-impossible challenge of collecting every lum in the game- There are 1000 of these, split up onto each level, a dang that is hard collecting them all. Also, if you complete a level to a particular standard- you get a bonus ìbutton bashingî mini game. Gee, thatís just what you need! What makes this game so great is there is so much to do- you will come back for more.
So, we have a great super-hero, set in a beautiful looking 3-D world trying to kick some pirate butt. What a great plot for a game. Well if thatís what Ubi Soft thought whilst making this- they were sure right with the ëgreatí bit. Rayman 2:The great escape- even though this is the first Rayman N64 title and you arenít really escaping, well all good games have to have flaws, even if it is just the title.
Very playable, colourful, a touch of cuteness, some rock-hard puzzles and challenge to match- that is Rayman 2. It really has something for everyone, though younger gamers will struggle towards the end. I highly recommend this game to those who donít yet own it, and if you do already own it-share your thoughts with me. I conclude by saying Rayman 2- what a great game.
Ice Blaster
Suppose that don't really help but anyway
Rayman shouldn't technically have any more sequels after this.
Why?
Well a french guy with no limbs can't exactly carry on with a little Rayman can he?
Think about it..
Mhwa ha ha ha!
:-)
