Because Iím not allowed to tie up the phone line on weekdays, this holidays Iíve got some free time on my hand, so I took this opportunity to watch off all the episodes I have on tape of a program I regularly miss. Namely, all the episodes or Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) since the new series started. I truly believe that this program is the last great detective series.
Itís got it all, the two (and a half) private gumshoes, a dingy office with arc windows, crazy storylines, murders, mysteries and magic. For anyone who doesnít know (and you damn well should), the Randall & Hopkirk being shown on BBC currently is a remake of a much older series of the same name. It features 2 standard private d***s, Randall and Hopkirk, but the latter has a slight problem: Heís dead. This ensures for much crime fighting capers involving Jeff Randall, Marty Hopkirk and Jeanie Hurst (Martyís girlfriend, she and Jeff are in love). However, because Martyís dead, he can use his powers to gain extra information, gather clues and solve the mystery! This may all sound very cheesy, and yes, it is. Thatís the beauty of it. Itís so unbelievable cheesy itís amazing, it reeks of the stuff!
OK, the stories may not be the best and the actingís hardly fantastic. Every week thereís a cameo appearance but the main actors, Vic Reeves (Marty?) and Bob Mortimer (Jeff?) arenít the greatest actors in the world, but theyíre damn good comedians. Thereís just so many jokes to be had from the whole ì2 blokes love one girl but oneís deadî affair. Did I mention that only Jeff can see Marty? Imagine the possibilities! Some of the moments just want to make you cringe, especially on the episode last Saturday (14th). Also, all great detective stories must have a final twist in the end. A lot of them you can just see coming, but even when theyíre glaringly obvious they still make you smile. ìBut the thing is, I donít drinkî, says the police officer. Brilliant! Anyone whoís seen the episode will know exactly what Iím on about, but if you havenít it just seems like any other line from a program. Thatís the brilliance about them.
Anyway, Iíve waffled enough about these two, but I just want o say ìCheersî, to Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased): The last great detective story.
Cheers!
