... now, I've been wondering about this for a while, and I'd be interested to see what other people think.... but are there to many Music Channels available through Sky Digial??

I know that ITV Digital only hase MTV, and I don't know whats available through Cable... but sometimes it feels we are just getting to much.

The reason I think this is, because I listen to these channels a lot... my Fave being MTV, MTV Hits, and MTV Base. But I do go through pretty much all of them (except Karang and MTV2, not really into that Music).... but when I am flipping between channels, a lot of the time, the Same Song is being played on 2 maybe even 3. I used to love the choice of channels I had available, but the all seem to be playing the same old songs now.

As far as I know there are only two Big Music Channel operators, MTV (who also own VH1) and EMAP, who have The Box, Kiss, Smash Hits, Magic, Q and Karang. Is there room for them both

Does anyone here have a fav Music Channel, and why that Channel???
I prefer MTV as it doesn't limit to the Tracks it plays like the EMAP ones, which have a list people ring and vote for.

Also, does having so many channels affect the final Sales of a Single???
I have to say, that I used to buy a hell of a lot of Singles, week in week out, but ever since I got Sky (Christmas 2000), I haven't bought a single CD. Why??? Why bother, the songs that I like are always available on TV now. They come out 2 or 3 weeks before thet go on sale, and are around for a monthe or so after (depending on their popularity), so thats almost 2 months of one song. J-Lo's Play being the best example, that was played so much that by the time it was on sale, I was bored of that one, and onto another one, and again, when that came out, didn't really feel the ned to buy it. Alot of the Record Companies blame Piracy for lack of sales, but I think that Music Television in general may be playing a small part in it too ... or is it just be who's like that??

I'd be interested to see how people feel about this, are there to many, not enough, or just enough, do you not by Singles anymore, do you buy them more now???

I suppose it comes down to what kinda music you like ... I wouldn't mind maybe another MTV Base type channel, but Sky don't make the channels, MTV and EMAP Do, so it's upto them really, the only think I'd prefer is to be able to take a few channels of my subscription, and pay a little less, but thats not gonna happen.

Though, about MTV showing Clips, I can't say I've seen that a whole lot, but I guess it depends on what show your watching....

.. I think I'm getting piracy and MTV mixed up when it comes to sales, I actually now agree that sales are probably better thanks to Music TV, it was also something that Turbo said somewhere else about how people here download it. Anyway, I wonder why there isn't a non-digital music channel?? (Regular TV I mean)

You can never have too many music channels- well you can but the more, the better. There are only really three decent music channels: MTV2, Kerrang, and Q, and they actually play full songs whereas MTV tend to play clips which can get annoying. I dont think Music channels effect sales, infact they actually introduce new bands making us want to buy there albums (I first heard Alkaline Trio on Kerrang). There are other things that effect sales like MP3 downloads and CD copying. I admit Sky Digital do have too many channels when it comes to things like pop music (with smashits, box, MTV Hits, Magic, etc.) but i hate pop music and i also hate Hip Hop/ Rap (with the exeptions of Afroman, D12, Dre etc.). If Sky introduced Kerrang 2 or another Rock channel and got rid of crappy channels, then i would be more than happy.

I watch the college television network whenever I do my washing, and they play a lot of music videos interspersed with news and sports information. They play any video past and present and also have a slot for the top 10 voted videos by students and show some of them. Its not just american rock or guitar bands they show dido, duran duran, gorillaz......
In respect to the music channels in the uk, its all about choice if you don't like one then you can watch another or simply choose not to watch any of them.
With regards to whether or not these channels are having a adverse affect on the single sales then I would say no, music video channels help to boost sales in a similar way to radio airplay. How many artists have sold more singles on the strength of their video: the moulin rouge song covering lady marmalade, hit me baby one more time by britney spears and here other songs including her "raunchy" (naff) video for her latest release with the method of distract them from the song then when the music is over they might think it was good.
(ok so I will admit that I bought baby one more time but I only saw the video after I bought the single, I had only ever heard it on the radio and did not know who it was by)
