While bored in Sheffield the other day, myself and a group of others I vaguely know got arguing about whether or not we should watch "Eastenders"(what the girls wanted to do) or carry on playing Tony Hawks 2(what the lads wanted to do). The argument raged for a while and what we were left with was an intriguing idea and a surprising victory for the THPS2 side!(Weyhey!)

Basically the jist of our rather weak argument was that TV has been the primary form of entertainment too long and that instead of bowing to its ideals we were going to make a stand. We basically forced the idea that gaming (in this case playstation) was "the new TV."
This set us to thinking, what if thats how things had worked out? Instead of having mindless drivel pumped directly into our brains via the idiot box, what if games were streamed to us so that the broadcasting was all interactive?

I thought it would be superb, a bit odd, but it might work.
Instead of your staple diet of 30 minutes of Eastenders 4 of the 5 weekdays, you could have RPG's playing in that time slot. So at 8:00pm Monday night you could set out to get a little further on Final Fantasy 7 for 30 minutes instead, thats on IIBC1 (Interactive Idiot Box Chanel 1). If however FF7 is not your thing, you could always flick to IIBC4 at 8:00 and play Zelda for 30 minutes (including an advert break).

Then for those with more specific tastes IIBC3 would have "Skies of Arcadia" playing at 7:30 everyday (and repeated randomly throughout). The only problem with IIBC3 is that occasionally you'll get in from work, have some food, then sit down for a half hour of "Skies of Arcadia" only to find out you've got to play through two hours of "Pro Evolution Soccer" first (think about it!).

For those of you still working that out, I just meant that sports programming would be replaced by sports gaming.

It'd be fantastic, in the mornings you'd get "Mario64" and "Banjo Kazooie" for the kids to play on, stepping up through the day with various RPG's on various channels, then into the evening you'd get games like "Resident Evil: Code Veronica" or "Silent Hill" playable in 4 parts on mondays at 9:00pm from November the 12th (replacing those odd "N" part dramas you get - like "Baby Father" on BBC2 at the moment).
"Later with Jools" could be replaced with "Parappa the rapper" playable late on IIBC2 (currently followed by a blast on "Jimmy Whites world wind snooker" or related games)

All this would lead up to the big Saturday night Blockbuster "Metal Gear Solid 2" playable from 10:00pm this Saturday only on IIBC1!!!

I wonder what beat 'em ups and games like Tetris would replace?
I suppose Tetris could replace Educational programs and be playable early mornings on IIBC4.

What I described was gaming taking the place of TV, I don't mean to sound all high and mighty, but A) it was a hypothetical situation werein everyone would play games instead of watching TV, and B) If you apply what I'm saying in the way that I meant it, you'll find that there is a much broader amount of gamers. Ok so not everyone can manage to sit and play in an exact time spot - yet millions of viewers manage to watch Eastenders, etc. with alarming regularity.
Also I think you'll find that more people have access to TV than they do the internet.

Read, understand, reply.

You're almost there.

The internet rules, if you have a PC, or are planning to get a next gen console, you will be able to turn on your TV, and play your games, whenever you want, against millions of people. What you described isn;t as good as this solution, because some people cannot play a game at a set time every night/week, but with the internet and a console/PC you can play whenever you want, at whatever you want.

Beat em ups could replace the sort of fights channel 5 show late at night.

So a game channel that replaces 'normal television' with games taking the spot of a similar televsion counterpart, Football - ISS.

But what game would replace the late Friday night channel 5 viewings?
