The place: An aging arcade on a beach on the Southwest coast of England
There was this yellow glow and a familiar theme tune which led me to a cabinet and took all my money away. The game was The Simpsons Arcade and featured Bart, Maggie, Marge, Lisa and (of course) Homer in a fun side scrolling adventure.
Now back to present day, I have my iPhone in hand, I don’t even need to be near a beach and yet I find myself still playing The Simpsons Arcade. Ok, so it’s actually a cut down version of the main game and has only one playable character, Homer, but the essence of the original is there and so are all the cast in one form or another.
The Story
A sinister group (seemingly nearly everyone in Springfield of any importance) has hidden a secret plan on a USB stick inside a Donut. Unfortunately for them, Homer has got his hands on it and, as you would expect, eaten it.
Now our yellow chubby friend finds himself chased by a bunch of suited thugs, bee man, krusty workers etc in an attempt to get it back.
Going Solo
Unlike the arcade game, You, as Homer, have to work alone for most of the time, but at least he has an arsenal of post boxes, crates and weapons to pick up along the way.
If you’re lucky you’ll also come across icons that give you a special move using Maggie and Marge, Lisa or Bart for a short time, eliminating everyone on screen in various ways.
Other than this you can punch, jump and land (causing everyone nearby to fall over) or hold punch for a rage attack, as well as holding or throwing weapons. It’s basically Double Dragon with a Simpsons Makover.
It Was All Yellow
Graphically The Simpsons Arcade is pretty, it captures the look and feel of the series with the bright cartoon graphics and copes well even when loads of enemies are on the screen.
Sounds have been captured from the series too, making it feel more authentic, though there is a lack of actual speaking, probably due to the size of the app.
Insert Coin
But this is an arcade game, and one on a handheld platform at that, so it’s no surprise to find that it’s a short game. There are a few mini-games in between levels but short of being a bad player you’ll see the end of this game in no time. For 59p though it’s still well worth the money and it’s something you’ll come back to after completing but having played the original game it still feels like a bit of a missed opportunity.
