Michael Mannís debut film in 1981 was this, Thief, and what a debut film it is.

The story revolves around a jewel thief (played be James Caan) who wants to take one last score before retiring. However, he makes the mistake of making a deal with organized crime and his employers arenít too happy about his wanting to retire.

Dennis Farina and William Peterson both make a very small appearance in Thief and both of these actors teamed up with Mann again in his film Manhunter, both of whom have much larger roles.

James Caan was very well cast. He played his character brilliantly ñ cool and calm most of the time but when people try to screw him, out comes the gun.

There were a few moments in the film where I could see it was definitely a Mann film. His trademark of having shots with music but no sound effects was still there and as usual, it worked splendidly. However, there were a few moments where I thought, ëif he were to make this film now, heíd have done that differently.í

The climax to the film was absolute genius. Caan is making his way through a house looking for the crime boss. He has his gun at the ready and the camera is almost always just behind him. There is no sound and no music, just total silence. You canít even hear his footsteps and it really adds to the tension. However, once he finds the boss and kills him, a few other guys run out into the garden and Caan gives chase. It is at this point where the music starts to play and the shooting begins.

Thief was actually fairly similar to Heat. De Niroís character in Heat was very much the same sort of character as James Caanís in Thief. There were also a few points where the same lines or phrases were used. ìIím home freeî for example.

Overall, Thief was fantastic for a debut film. It was quite slow but never boring and the final gunfight added a bit of action much like it did at the end of another of Mannís films, Manhunter.

After Thief, Mann went on to direct such great films as Last of the Mohicans, The Insider and of course, Heat.
