Even though I'm a truly huge fan of the Playstation developments, I think that the gaming industry owes it all to Nintendo. Nintendo started the whole craze of games due to some truly superb titles at the time. Let's start right from the beginning.

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was where Nintendo began their reign of games. This 8-bit system was a big hit in the 80s because it was one of the best games developments at the time. It may look simple to us now because of how far we moved on, but then it was the same experience as how the Gamecube is going to be when released. As many people were used to playing basic games with no colour, then there was light when Nintendo came in. The NES came with small, square controllers with four activatable buttons, as well as directional buttons. With it came the entrance of some fun, popular titles such as Zelda and Final Fantasy. This machine was the highlight of RPG gaming with cream on top! Mario was largely successful with his colourful graphics and easy control system, there are still plenty of fans of this game now. The NES was truly an enjoyable start to Nintendo's gaming era.
Many years after the quite successful NES came the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) and as the title slightly gives away, this was a 'super' machine. This 16-bit improvement wasn't the only successor now as it had quite a competitive battle with the Mega Drive. Although the Mega Drive offered some quality games for that time, the SNES offered a lot more quality games, and of course Mario was included! But now another edition, but different edition of Mario was created. This was Mario Kart! Everyone enjoyed and played this game to the max because it revealed the true definition of 'fun'. This multiplayer hit forced a smile on your face with its all-around playability. The SNES also had many other titles to show the world its capabilities from a range of genres, but surely the RPG genre ruled the Nintendo world. Hundreds of games are available today for fans of this addictive machine, which shone Nintendo's light brighter in the gaming industry.
Nintendo then took a well-deserved break during the time Playstation entered the world of gaming and development, but were still carrying on strong with their titles. Playstation though was another visible improvement to a console and it gave the SNES a run for its money. This 32-bit machine was part of the huge Sony company so obviously got the most attention. Nintendo were ready for this kind of ambush though, and were preparing to reveal another work of art. Then slowly, but surely, the N64 was released out of its cage just raring to go. It was named this so gaming fans would see that it was an improvement to the ever-successful Playstation being a 64-bit machine. Early releases for the N64 had sort of a misty-look of graphics and some games were perfect at the time such as Goldeneye (truly addictive). The N64 was the potential chance for the head designer at Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto (the Spielberg of games) who brought us the Mario and Zelda series, to truly show the world HIS capabilities. He gave the N64 at its latest stages, Donkey Kong, Mario and Mario Kart 64 and the Zelda series, which were all big hits! His games have made Nintendo what it is, so well done Mr Miyamoto. Still, the N64 contribution to the RPG genre, which gave Nintendo most of its success, was little and quite disappointing to fans of the genre. The main contributions came from Mr Miyamoto, so once again well done! Most of his creations on the N64 offered excellent graphics, vast landscapes and fully 3D interactive worlds that encouraged exploration. Some truly great titles were seen on this format like Star Wars Racer and Mario Tennis, but still the N64 offered nothing revolutionary. Most people loved this console all the same and still do today.
Nintendo have offered a lot to the gaming industry. They first released a great improvement towards the handhelds department the Gameboy, then improved to Gameboy Colour and have now dominated the handheld industry with the Gameboy advance. This little work of art has a mighty 32-bit system squashed into it bringing us more fun and entertainment for dwelling on. Such great and popular titles have been reproduced for the machine and it is the first ever handheld to show FMV's. Absolutely amazing!! Once again Nintendo have dominated and are most likely to do it again.
With the Gamecube lined up for release and with so many great games soon to be available for it, there's surely no doubt that Nintendo will dominate again, but this time it's not going to be that easy. The Playstation 2 has offered some great games, but haven't really produced games that push it to the limit (which we are sure to see this autumn), and the XBOX is also due for release is going to blow the gaming industry away with such realistic and revolutionary graphics from Microsoft. But if Mr Miyamoto continues his fine game creations, which I have currently seen looks great, there's no doubt that this beautiful machine is going to appeal to many carrying the great run of Nintendo's great gameplay in games.

Since Nintendo have produced so many machines and games to suit gamers needs, they are surely experienced in this huge and successful business so I'm pretty certain that it's going to continue it's reign for the Ultimate Entertainment Developer!

No, Nintendo were collaborating with Sony to make the CD unit for the PSX (which was to be the new Nintendo console). However, they fell out for some reason, and Nintendo pulled out, stupidly leaving Sony with all the plans, documents, research, specs, etc. They thought they would just leave it, but they were wrong. Sony carried on and the PlayStation was born.

Basically, Nintendo hung themselves.

I agree, but you could also thank Nintendo because of them is the reason the playstation is around. The playstation was going to bbe an add-on, but it was yet another one that nintendo decided not to release, so Sony took it and made it into a totaly new console!
