Yesterday I visited Wales for the first time in my life - we had an away match with the fencing team at Cardiff Uni.
So what were my thoughts?
The first thing I noticed was that we had to pay to get in, rather then out. This rather suprised me. Perhaps the Toll collectors were Irish?
The next thing I noticed, was the road signs. They were written in two languages, one above the other. The top one was English, and the seoncd one was kind of similar, only with all the vowels removed, and a few random consonants thrown in for fun.
If anyone could explain to me how to prnounce the phonetic sound of 'wnr' or 'drn', please do. Not sure what's going on with the double consonants, either. Does a double indicate plegm is to be used? I fail to see how 'dd' can possibly be any different to 'd'. Especially when you start a word with it.
Road names seemed a little on the unimaginative side. I passed 'college road' and 'cobble road', though I chnaged my min when we passed a 'stenchwood road'.
Enough of the language. Nobody there speaks it anyway, as far as I could tell. This explains why, Contrary to what I'd been told, people in Wales don't wear diving masks when talking to each other.
The people there seemed nice enough, though being at a University I don't know what percentage of them were actually Welsh.
Sadly though, we only had time to stay for the fencing (we were loing 45-43 when Cardiff's equipment failed), so we were unable to stay till the evening and sample the highly reputed 'red light' farms, or other delights of the Welsh nightlife.
Overall, it wasn't a bad day out.
