Right, let's see if anyone here can shead (sp?) some light on this. I'm currently running this spec PC:

AMD K7 Athlon Thunderbird 750 o/ced to 800MHz
320 MBs of RAM
Asus A7V266 Mobo
Voodoo 3 2000
Sound Blaster 1028
etc etc etc

My problem lies with my RAM. I can be running nothing but Explorer and Systray and still be managing to use 80% of my RAM! That's ridicoulous! There is nothing running, I've even done Ctrl + Alt + Del to make sure. However, when my PC starts it seems to run as many proggys as it can find! This is just junk like Aimster and some stuff that I dont even want to know is. Could this be my prob? Or could it be the ridiculous temperature that my PC seems to run at?

Ah well, roll on getting paid so I can shove some fans in this wee beastie!

Windows does, indeed, cache all its recent programs and files, therefore using up RAM. It will get rid of them as soon as you need it though.

However, if you really REALLY want it back, you can download TweakAll from Download.com. It will clear out RAM for you, amongst many other things.

Windows 98 at the moment, but I'm trying to get hold of Windows 2000.

Ah well, no work and a broadband connection to play with again, this work experience is terrible. =oP Oooh, i love this connection, i just got a 40mb service pack from windows in 17 minutes! It would take days on my modem!

Luke's told you this before...

For a start, remove all the startup items you can...either fromt he Startup folder in your start menu, or via the program itself.

I wouldn't worry too much personally, windows will cache recently used files in ram so that it can access them again quickly if needed. The access time is such that they can be removed to free up space for applications within nanoseconds, so you may find it's just windows being clever..
