Do you remember the day when most car games use to be like Lotus and Crazy Cars?

You remember? When you just blasted along some motorway type road filled with loads of traffic and some other cars which you actually had to overtake. And, aswell as having to overtake certain cars, you had to reach checkpoints within a certain time limit aswell!

What happened to these types of car games?

Every car game we play nowaday seems to be the same. Just race against about 8 other cars round three laps on a circuit to see who reaches the finish first. You then have you car SPOGS games like GT3, where you just spend hours driving round the same old tracks with some naff car, until your've amassed enough money to afford to buy a half decent car, and then the game picks up speed and is enjoyable!

Well what happened to checkpoints? What was the last car game you played where you had to reach a checkpoint within a certain time limit, otherwise it was game over and you couldn't finish the race? I miss those old skool type driving games, where there was a lot of tension in the fact that you had to try hard to actually finish the race aswell as finish in a decent position!

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with racing games nowadays, but I just wish that some developers would try something a bit different for a change. The only game that i've played in recent times, which does try to go back to the Lotus type racing game had been Vanishing Point. I really liked that game because while overtaking loads of cars while driving round. You also had to try and finish in a good time. This is something that i'd like to see more of in racing games!

What do other people think of the state of racing games at the moment?

:)
