Doesnít matter what genre it is, just talk up a band that you think should be a lot bigger than they are and why you like them, why other people may like them.
Who are they like? Influences?
Go on, you can never hear too much music.
Iíll start:
Tool
Rock music for those that prefer thought and precision as opposed to angry little imps wearing baggy shorts and screaming at their parents for not understanding them very well.
Imagine a cross between Pink Floyd, Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin and an H R Geiger painting.
Musicianship of an outstanding ability, time signatures to make your head hurt and melodies you would never have thought of yourself.
3 albums in reverse order:
Undertow ñ Dark, brooding and full of dirty little subject matters (child abuse, fear of commitment, refusal to see the wrongdoings of a partner through gullible love, the benefits of ìbackdoor lovingî). Nasty songs done very, very well. Not the shock tactic nonsense of other supposedly ìdarkî bands like Marilyn Manson, but approached with thought, intelligence and the ability to evoke a mood through music.
Aenima ñ Not so dark, but still dealing with similar subject matter along with new ones like wishing to see LA fall into the sea after an earthquake, the evolutionary ability of man through chromosomal changes and the benefits of hallucinogenics to assist an understanding of the world. Plus a song with Bill Hicks sampled throughout.
Lateralus ñ Deals with evolving the mind and soul, not dwelling on previous traumas and the realisation that life is an illusion of your own making. Differs to previous albums by not concentrating on the nastier, bleaker subjects but imploring us to change our minds and beliefs to accept that there is more than we understand to life.
Tool strive to create a body of art, as opposed to singles to hit the radio and fade.
They use the space between songs to play frequencies designed to induce harmonious alpha-waves (ìionsî), muted conversations and on one song, the sound of a baby crying with the singerís voice distorted to almost unintelligible level (except for one line of ìShut up b****rd childî).
Not always pleasant, but always an experience and leaves you thinking afterwards.
Not for those that like Limp Bizkit at all, but for anyone that likes extremely well made music?
A must-have.
They are a soul band playing soul music 33 years this year. From 1968 all the way up until today...
Or so they would describe themselves. However, they also have a strong funk feel and even a bitt of a jazz vibe working for them on a lot of their numbers, as well as their soulful ballads.
Tower of Power currently boasts and has previously boasted some very very talented musicians.
On Bass, they have the one trick wonder horse stylings of Rocco Prestia, I'll be the first to admit that Rocco is guilty of sounding very similar on most tracks (his style offers little variation) but most would admit that what he does, he does better than anyone in the business.
On drums they have the multi-talented David Garibaldi - he did actually leave the band for 18 years but now he's back and playing better than ever.
They used to have Chester Thompson (now with Santana) as their keyboard player, but have now darfted in Roger Smith (who isn't as good, but still rocks!).
Saxaphonists they've had plenty, most notable would be Lenny Picket who was with the band through their strongest period in the 70's, the only guy who comes close to Lenny is Norbert Statchel who is currently playing with them.
Most notable albums through the years would be their seventies ones
"Tower of Power"
"Back to Oakland"
"Urban Renewal"
"In the Slot"
"In the Slot" would probably be Tower of Power at the top of their game. If you're going to check them out, get this album or their most recent live album entitled:-
"Soul Vaccination"
They've returned to their (well band leader Emilio Catillo's) home town of Oakland, California to record a new album this year
"Oakland Zone" keep an ear out for it. Having said that their fame in the UK is somewhat limited. So good luck finding any!
Yahel is Isreals rising Trance star. Has two albums out at the moment. The first, entitled For The People, is relatively difficult to get hold of. Not listed at Amazon.co.uk or .com.
I personally prefer the second album (Waves of Sound). It's perfect for putting on at any time. Whether you're getting ready to go out, or just got back from the pub/club, it suits all occasions.
The two albums are both Trance, pure and simple. And none of this crap you hear on the radio. You certainly don't get the bog standard 3 1/2 minute track that's obviously been done specifically for the radio.
Each track on the album is over 6 minutes long, some are 9 or 10. Because of this you only get 10 tracks on the second album, and 11 (I think) on the first. But they are all muscial masterpeices.
Some use quotes from films integrated with the track, some are just music all the way through. All are excellent.
I'm not going to try and compare them to anyone, as Yahel has his own sound, needless to say if you like dance/trance or just want to hear some proper non-chart crap, this is an ideal starting point.
I have some .mp3's, so if anyone wants a couple of tracks, let me know.
Damn, I love that song, especially the bit right at the end, the guitars making a lovely revolving, churning sound that I can listen to again and again without getting bored.
> Try Glassjaw..
Yes I like Glassjaw, they wrote a song about me - Ry Ry's Song. With my name being Ryan and all that.........oh you get the point :-D
> Just let me put this now:
My favorite band ever is Pink Floyd. And Yes I do
> know enough about them to validly say this.
What a band, what superb
> albums.
People, just go and buy 'the wall'.
Pink Floyd- Several Species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict:D
Far have been described as a mixture of Radiohead and the Deftones, both great bands in their own right. Their music genre has been named Emo-Rock which I have not heard of before and still wonder what it means, someone told me it emo stand for emotional, which I can understand with Far ñ does anyone know?
I started listening to Far after I heard a cover they done with the Deftones one time and I loved it, so I decided to hear some of their other music. They have now grown to become my favourite band for many reasons, though they are not together anymore, but Jonah (The lead singer) still makes great music for his solo band Onelinedrawing.
I will now give you a little history on Far and then explain why I like them:
1991 ñ Far form in Sacramento, California. At the time Jonah was at college and left to join the band.
1994 - Far became semi-popular with locals in and around Sacramento with their first LP ëQuickí ñ it sold over 5,000 copies. Far released many tapes and demos after ëQuickí including a four track tape called ñ ëIn The Aisle, Yellingí.
1996 ñ Far signed a deal with ëImmortal Recordsí and released their first album under ëImmortalí called: ëTin Canís With Strings To Youí ñ This album didnít do that well commercially but attracted a lot more fans.
1998 ñ Far release their third CD ñ ëWater & Solutionsí. It was very different to their previous album, it had much more singing, less screaming and melody was everywhere.
1999 ñ Far officially break up in the Spring just when everything seemed to be going so well. The band called it a ëbreakí but everyone knew Far would be nomore.
Present ñ Farís lead singer, Jonah, sets up his own solo band project called Onelinedrawing and continues today to make music the way he likes it.
There was something about Far unlike any other group that attracted me to them, their music was something I had been looking for, for a long time. As I researched into the band more and heard more of their songs my love for them grew as realised what a great combination the members were. Jonah is a tremendous singer and he proves that by his vocals and variety of techniques, the rest of the band just seem to get timing so right etc, it really is a great combination.
The tag they had ñ Emo-Rock ñ shows they were a different kind of band as I have never seen a band underneath that title.
Some sources say Far split because of an argument about getting back home from somewhere one time. But other sources say that the ways of being a band were getting too much for them and that the ëfuní was being lost of being a band by getting so big. If you listen to the last track on their last album ñ ëWaiting For Sundayí I think it says something about why the band split. The title alone tells you they wanted a rest.
But for now, Far are unfortunately no more and a great change they made was their last change. I am always talking about Far to my mates and friends but they just donít want to know, they like a lot of Nu-Metal/Punk and things you see. If they just sat down and listened to what great music they made they would enjoy it.
I would love to see Far back making great music but itís not going to happen so I enjoy their old work and I love it, I hope you do too.
I will post below some of Farís greatest songs, please download or listen to a few and post you views.
