"Trust me, I know what I'm doing."

Those famous words were heard by many a late night TV watcher in the 80's, uttered by the one and only detective Sledge Hammer. This late night American TV series had all the production values of...well, most other late night American TV series really, but the jokes came thick and fast (however bad they were) and you just couldn't help but watch to see what happened next.

The main characer was played by David Rasche, also famous for such ëhitsí as Nurses (another late night American sit-com, surprisingly) Inspector Sledge Hammer who carries his beloved gun with him every where he goes and even sleeps with it next to him! He brings new meaning to the word trigger happy. Luckily, Detective Dori Doreau (played by Anne-Marie Martin) keeps him in check, while Captain Trunk (Harrison Page) just despairs every time they go out on a mission.

In the first episode, Sledge vows to rescue the kidnapped daughter of the mayor (dead or alive!) and all manner of excuses for shooting anything that moves ensue. Somehow, Sledge manages to save the day and his new partnership with the bewildered Doreau.

The jokes are sometimes so funny you will be doubled up, and sometimes so bad you will cringe, but there is something magic about Racheís smile and gunhappy attitude that you will just have to watch the next episode. Sledgehammer needs repeating on terrestrial tv, in the meantime, you will just have to trust me!
