Yes that's it, a ladder. How many times have you been killed because when you reach the top or middle of a ladder you always have trouble getting off it and end up falling to your death? No matter how good a first person shooter is when it comes to ladders every game falls short. It's something that really gets on my nerves.
In some games you stick to ladders like glue, which is a good thing as it stops you from falling off half-way up but it's a major pain when it means you want to get off the thing. You stick to the ladder and when you try and get off (normally by pressing the jump button) you end up jumping backwards, away from the ladder and fall to your death.
In other games you hardly have any grip on the ladders which is good for getting off them but that means it is quite a struggle climbing them. You have to be really careful and in some cases even looking left and right can cause you to lose your grip and fall.
Has anybody else had these problems with ladders in games. Maybe it's me. Maybe coming in drunk after clubbing/pubbing with my uni buddies, whacking on a few first person shooters and trying to play them has lead me to being crap at climbing ladders. But maybe it is the ladders.....hmmm i wonder.

As for Chuckie Egg. I'm pretty sure that you could jump from a ladder before getting to the top. You had to jump from ladder to ladder on some of the levels, which was done by holding left or right while pressing jump. Also, just pressing jump meant falling to the bottom of the ladder which was quite usefull. Geez, how do I remember that game in soo much detail. Oh yer, it was GREAT!
As for ladders in general, I think there quite useful, and done better in some games than in others. In the upcomming Wolfenstein game, they are going to put rail guards round the tops of the ladders, which will stop you from falling off the ladder once you get to the top.
:)
Come to think of it, I still haven't completed it. Better do it soon, I must be near the end. Surely. I've been playing it for over a year. :D
This is a point that gets to me in this type of game; As if there isn't enough ways for your character to meet a grizzly end without having him stack it down a ladder. Not only must you contend with half the gun welding maniacs in the world trying to end you, but you must then carefully traverse the 'Ladder of Doom' to safely pass to the next floor. Why can't they just have stairs? Bloody lazy programmers, that's what it is.
Almost as bad as jumping rivers of molten stuff in a FPS's. If I wanted to play a platform game then I would buy one.
I remember Chuckie egg, you couldn't walk until you were at the very tip of the ladder.
Same on the old Donkey Kong Arcade.
Anyone here old enough to remember it?
