This may surprise some of you but I think football's popularity (playing it that is) is falling. There are alot more people turning to alternative and in my mind more enjoyable sports to spend their free time. These sports are mainly rugby and basketball which are alto more fun to play and all the players are involved. Let's analyse each sport.
Football: Very popuar game in this current generation for some time. Involves kicking a round ball into a rectangular goal. When I was 8 I played for a small football club, looking back i am amazed how much pressure they put on us. The coach would shout and bawl at us if we were losing or if we lost. He talked in footy jargon which nobody above the age of 12 would understand. I quit when I was 10.
All the ethics of the game have been thrown away with riots after your 'team' loses and it for some reason affects people (especially scousers, I don't know why!) Also the money in the professional game is way out of proportion and so are the ticket prices.
Rugby Union: Full contact sport. Involves getting an egg shape ball grounded over a line. I have been playing this sport since I was 11. It is a much better game than football in term of enjoyment and atmosphere, families come and watch it and people of both sides sit together in the stands. They just want to see some good sport being played.
Also the game is alot cheaper to watch (and we have a good national team)
Basketball: A fast paced game involving getting a ball through a net. This game is a great game to play, especially with some friends in a park. I have been playing this since last year and have now been playing it regulary ever since. Games are also great for spectators.
Summary: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THESE SPORTS? is football really going. This is the way my school is going, maybe its just a thing in berkshire. Lets hear your thoughts anyway.

I don't think that our generation is losing intrest. In our school nearly everyone plays football, but you saying that, some kids have started bringing in rugby balls now :S

Participation in all sports seems to be declining in my opinion, partly because of easier alternatives (eg, tv, video games, easier as in requiring less hassle to do) and also because beond school level, the organised groups to play in are generally orientated towards professionalism, so are only there for the best players, not the casual ones.
Can't escape all those stats about average weight increasing, and more and more people becoming clinically obese.
I don't mean to suggest that this is a bad thing, appart from the health risks in the extreme cases and the loss to the sport, if people are happy not participating in sports, that's up to them, i'm not trying to criticise that.
Now if you'll excuse me, i'm off to look for the lid to close this can of worms...

No kidding - i don't think i've ever met a true manc who supports utd over city!

Well as they say power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutly. I hope they put some pay-bans on sports so the thing that happened to football cant happen to rugby. As for my experience, I come from manchester. No city in the world is more football orientated, but i dont like man u. I used to get the mickey taken when I was 8 for not knowing waht 'supporting' a team meant. Football is practically a religion with those who dont know scares and buzz-words being ostricised. The public may support footy over rugby, but most people are idiots.

Personally i would be glad to see the back of football.
Rugby is far better. (i used to play in my school team, it was hard work, but fun) Who said it best "football is the gentleman's sport played by hooligans, rugby is the hooligans game played by gentlemen"? Most football's get paid far too much and act like idiots, and so much pressure is put on young people to be good at it, that it overwhelms them. I stopped playing footy as soon as i wasnt forced to by idiotic PE teachers.And i really hate those idiots who ruin our countries good name by rioting over peple kicking a leather BALL! Football sucks.
