On my travels today, I discovered an ideal safety net for minimizing future issues as described in my 'lappy battery issues' thread.
I need a NAS.
Questions...
Can I configure a NAS so that only I have access on a shared laptop/netbook etc?
Can I install my software onto it as opposed to the laptop, and run that software from any laptop with NAS access?
Any other issues I should be aware of?
Any recommendations?
Neil
I think I misunderstood the purpose of a NAS.
I think I'm better off with my online backup solution. I can just restore/install from that as needed.

Yes.

In the case of programs such as MS Ofiice, no, you can't install and run them remotely. However some NAS's have built in software for stuff like automating downloads and surveillance.

A majority of NAS's are BYOD (Bring Your Own Disk) meaning the price doesn't include any hard drives. However some do have drives, such as the Buffalo LinkStation and Netgear ReadyNAS.

Yep. If you're not to worried about price and want a lot of features together with RAID support I've personally used the QNap TS-209 Pro (this died after 4 years of being on continuously so even NAS's aren't bullet proof). I now have a Synology DS 209 with 2 Samsung 500GB disks in RAID 1, which is very good. Also at my father in law's there is a Synology DS 110j which is a single disk NAS. The 2 Synology's backup to each every night.
If you want something a little cheaper then you should be able to find the D-Link DS323 (I think that's the model) and that supports 2 drives and is currently around £79.99.
