A psychotic disorder characterized by delusions of persecution with or without grandeur, often strenuously defended with apparent logic and reason.
Extreme, irrational distrust of others.
The effects of paranoia are those that drive a human being to live in a world of fear and a world where nothing is certain. There are certain aspects that can make this an everyday occurrence or make it a fear of something whether it is an object or a living creature.
People can be afraid of objects that you pass by from day to day and ignore, things that you may take for granted or perhaps things that have been manifested inside of your mind due to an experience. People can fear spiders; other might fear snakes whilst some might even fear birdís feathers.
The fear is all part of the humans mind and is created by certain aspects. Many are from a your child hood and are caused because of this bad childhood that was experienced, most are from just general experiences whilst others can actually be caused by films and games.
Since the graphics of games has increased over the years it means the ability to frighten has increased along with the ability of realism. Market research can be carried out to find what has an immediate impact on us or maybe just to scare the hell out of you. With films and games the technological advances have made it easier to do this but that doesnít mean it hasnít been around for a long time.
Films:
Jaws ñ I would have to say in my honest opinion that Jaws would have to be the film that would have had the biggest impact on the world and myself. The story of an invincible predator that hunts for the love of killing, a seamless machine capable to ripping apart human flesh and bones in a matter of seconds. The thought of an unseen creature in a time where human knowledge was lacking was something that sent a shiver around the oceans of the world.
ëWhat you canít see can kill youí. I think that phrase is accurate for this film as it is plays with the human mind leaving them in a state of terror and unaware of the world they live in. It was also perfectly made because of how the film portrays the characters paranoia towards this deadly animal, but the most fearful part of the film is that itís not too far off the truthÖ.
Arachnophobia ñ The film that makes me cringe and the reason us people hate those ëCreepy Crawliesí. Another one of Spielbergís films that delivers and from the title you can tell it is deliberately aimed at people like myself who fear those little sods that harass the innocent victims of the household.
Whilst watching this film I found myself turning away and call me a whitey you may, but like The Blair Witch Project this films shows the paranoia towards certain aspects, and this one is about spiders. Those big hairy, damn ugly eight legged freaks that only purpose in life is to terrify people like myself. This film would have had an impact on because at a young age the mind believes what it sees and when youíve got a fear of them films like this donít tend to help.
The Blair Witch Project ñ ëThe most terrifying film of all timeí. Those are the words that critics used to describe the horror which cost $28,000 to make and made over $200,000,000 in just 6 weeks in America along. The film itself is based around the fears of humans and it shows the emotional effect because of it.
The film plays with the mind and when it ends after only 1 hour and 20 minutes you are left almost shaken. Never once do you see the ëWitchí and all remains a mystery, the jerky camera and the film shown as a documentary make this truly a truly terrifying film that makes you think twice about entering the woods again on a late night. Once again with this film it isnít something that is impossible and could easily happen which gives it a higher terror factor, although really the characters are the real reason why it holds this fear of paranoia, seeing the fear and knowing youíre going to die.
Silence Of The Lambs ñ The film that shows the characteristics of a brutal serial killer and ways of cannibalism was awarded five academy awards when first released in 1991, since then nothing has even come close. The character that stole the show was Dr Hannibal Lector, AKA, Hannibal the Cannibal who has a sinister fascination for eating people.
The film included an outside story of Buffalo Bill and that was what made the story what it was. The film doesnít make you as such weary about the thought of this in the world, I found Ravenous did that better, but it tries to show that not all criminal masterminds happen to be sadistic villains who donít know about their ABCís. Instead it shows that whoever they are, whatever they might be doing professional wise, they can just be as cruel and blatantly evil as the next man. A great film to watch with a nice bottle of Chianti and some fava beansÖ
Games
Resident Evil ñ Now this is without a doubt one of those games that makes you terrified to go back to playing and scares the wits from you. The gentle footsteps of the ëHuntersí creeping around the corner, the corner that you canít see around. It all builds up such tension and at certain points you just canít carry on.
Iíd say that films supply more of the paranoia feeling whilst games can supply more fear whilst being viewed. The games dive you into the world the characters inhabit, and thatís what makes them so terrifying. And that is what only a few games are capable off.
Metal Gear Solid ñ Whilst with this game itís more the feeling of tension then fear it still has the user hooked and dove into the game, you are no longer yourself but Solid Snake. Your heart beats as the you creep up behind the soldiers and as youíre one bullet away from murdering the boss. The complex storyline thought steals the game and makes it like a Hollywood story and thatís what makes this game to fantastic.
Silent Hill ñ ëThe most terrifying game of all timeí, voted by the critics and another game by Konami. Set just like Peter OíTooles ëThe Phantomsí, this game is set in a ghost town where nothing is quite what is seems. The freights are endless and the fog ruins your view making the living dead appear just a matter of yards from you.
Based around the Resident Evil series, this game shocked the nation and sent fear through the gaming world. Very chilling and ultimately satisfying.
Other films such as the Exorcist were made so public because of the events that surrounded them, such as the set setting on fire and the suicides following the films release. This would have made the parents a lot wearier about what their children where watching and soon the same will happen to games.
Dreams can all be filled with paranoia and cases of acting their partners whilst sleeping isnít such an unusual event in todayís society. It just makes you think what has affected us and how much damage it can do.
The world is not a safe place as it is and the fears you have make it more insecure for yourself and maybe even the people you call your friends.
Thanks for reading

I didn't say they did but experiences through games or films might cause a fear that has manifested due to something viewed that was as simple and harmless as a game.
Games don't affect me either. I know they are just games so I play them knowing I'll get some enjoyment out of it.
The only thing that does make me paranoid is the mistakes I made in the past and when a similar situation arises, I feel I will make the same mistake again.
Nice read anyway.

I agree, the second is odd, and not at all fun.
The first time I saw Blair Witch Project I crapped myself. It plays with your head, the second blair witch was pants.
Suddenly it builds up and prepares you for a shock or just a sudden BANG will send a shock to the system. One film I saw recently though was 'The Gift' and that was trully terrifying. All this makes me sound like a woss but that film really did it for me.
Its seems though that films often are more terrifying than films, this is mainly because films are more graphic, and often what you are seeing is very realistic, while games have that obvious computer graphics effect so you know it is not real.
Good post too Mr Nice Guy.
