1st Party Developers: The company themselves who make games for their own system (i.e. Microsoft, Sony, Nindendo, Sega).
2nd Party Developers: Other developers that make games exclusively for a systems (i.e. Rare, Square, Polyphonic, Eidos, Ingoc. Inc).
3rd Party Developers: Developers that make multi-platform games (i.e. Capcom, Namco)
First off, PS2 exclusives, or better yet, Sony exclusives, have never looked stronger and better. We started off with impressive looking games for the PS2. As we strolled later on in the year, PS2 exclusive support started kicking in. Not only have these exclusives been great, but the graphics to them are awesome. Then, Polyphonic Studios came back with an IMPRESSIVE LOOKING game, GT3. Hey, Sony didn't say the PS2 could handle games that looked as good as movies for nothing. In my opinion, Sony has the best car combat developer and the best racing developer by its side!
Then, in October-November, we will have Smackdown Just Bring It and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 coming out, both with incredible visuals and look to be hits. Let's not forget their dozen exclusives being released later on in 2001 and 2002. FFX and FFXI come out 2002, exclusive to PS2, and they look fantastic. Timesplitters was fun, and now Timesplitters 2 is coming back in a matter of months with impressive visuals and nice gameplay. Sony is finally getting some strong exclusive support.
Let's not forget that some other systems don't have the same 3rd party support Sony has, and that some 3rd party games only come out for PS2. Plus with 3rd party games like Tekken 4, Devil May Cry, Virtua Fighter 4, and Dynasty Warriors 3 coming out, you can bet PS2 will continue to get more impressive visuals and good exclusives later on and WILL be able to compete against GC and X-Box.
I believe if it came down to just exclusives; if there was no 3rd party support and all those 3rd party developers didn't exist, Sony would DEFINITELY survive.
At first, PS2 exclusives weren't all that special. GT3 was delayed. The Bouncer had incredible visuals, but unfortunately, had some unresponsive controls. If you are skeptical about PS2, I suggest that you rent it, like I did. Rent it for a few weeks, hire about 10 or 20 games and then you can get an idea is PS2 is the right console for you. Personally, I think that the PS2 is overhyper by a considerable margin. Don't get me wrong, PS2 is a decent console, but it lacks originality and this reflects into it's titles. Let's hope that new efforts like MGS2 and SD3:JBI can prove me wrong.
During the summer is where 1st/2nd party support for PS2 started to kick in. GT3 came out with jaw-dropping visuals, and was a hit.
In the future, we'll have more games (some which look to be hits) like Smackdown Just Bring It (made by THQ), Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 (made by Eidos Interactive), Drakan II (Made by Sony), OKAGE: Shadow King (made by Sony), SOCOM: Navy Seals (made by sony), Twisted Metal Black: Online (Made by Ingoc Inc.), NBA Shootout 2002 (Made by Sony), NHL Faceoff 2002 (Made by Sony), NCAA Final Four 2002 (Made by Sony), Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (made by Sony), SOCOM: Navy Seals (Made by Sony), and FFX (Made by Squaresoft). - Credit for list goes to various IGN web pages.
There are also a few other exclusives made by Sony coming out.
Well, I feel that X-Box and PS2 require third party support, but Nintendo does not. They don't need Capcom, Acclaim, Namco, or Sega; in my opinion. The majority of best-sellers come strait from Rare, Inteligent Systems, Hal, and Ead.
These studios produce the majority of Nintendo's best. (IE: Perfect Dark, Mario, Mario Party, Super Smash Bros, Mario Golf/Tennis, Mario Kart, Zelda, Wave Race, Metroid, and others...) The N64 had little 3rd party support, but it was eventually Sega, with all their 3rd party that got taken under.
Don't get me wrong, I want games like Sonic, Rogue Squadron, and Resident Evil. But I believe Nintendo could still survive without them. They even have the Game Boy Market all to themselves for extra revenue.
But do you honestly think that the newbie Microsoft could survive without it's massive 3rd party support? Not a chance in Hell. I don't care how rich Gates is, he's not gonna support a dying system that's making him lose money. The stock holders wouldn't agree with that either.
Could Sony do without 3rd party support? Maybe. I honestly don't know...
But I definately think Nintendo could survive without any 3rd party developers on it's side. It did it before. Now then that it DOES have the publishers and developers that it lacked in the 64-bit days, I believe it will surpass either Microsoft or Sony. I know one thing, The console world is only big enough for two...

Haha! You can't be serious!
Anyway, regarding third party support -I think that with companies such as Sony and Microsoft, they rely on these games to succeed - without them, they would have a weaker reputation than a certain Nintendo, who have established themselves as a games devloper, and not just a console developer. This was done through classic after classsic from the Nintendo house direct.
Although no matter who devloped the console, if they did not have third party support, they would have to do much more work in-house to make that console successful - just imagine devloping games for all genres just to satisfy the entire spectrum of the gaming audience! That's why they all rely on outside support, for their company to continue creating future consoles.
