I was just browsing Play247 a minute ago when I came across a 'superbit' edition of Crouching Tiger. This edition is only available on Region 1 and when I then searched for 'superbit' it came up with results - Air Force One, Desperado, Crouching Tiger and The Fifth Element.

When I clicked on any of them it always said the same thing. Where it should say the special features it instead says:

"The Superbit titles utilize a special high bit rate digital transfer process which optimizes video quality while offering a choice of both DTS and 5.1 Dolby Digital audio. All Superbit DVDs start with High Definition masters. The Superbit Collection will set a new benchmark in high resolution DVD image and sound, creating the ultimate in home entertainment. By reallocating data normally used for value-added content, Superbit DVDs can be encoded at double their normal bit rate while maintaining full compatibility with the DVD-Video format. The result is picture quality that provides outstanding detail. Superbit DVDs play on all DVD players. Currently DVDs are encoded to optimize space for the feature plus added value and audio streams. The SUPERBIT collection reallocates and converts the physical space ordinarily devoted to added value to higher bit rate video transfer and both Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS audio."

So what does this mean then?

Does it mean that there are no extra features, but the space usually used for extras is now used to improve picture quality.

Someone, please shed some light on this...

Well, there is only a very few Super Bit DVDs yet anyway. It would be the DTS bit that pushed it for me if anything - I've got a full DD/DTS 5.1 set up so you really notice the difference.

However, if it was a choice of a good collection of extras or a slightly improved picture, I'd go for the extras every time. Like I say, the DTS track might swing it if the original has little or no extras, but I'm happy enough with regular DVD picture for the moment.

Yeah that's what I thought but I wasn't sure. They put it in such high tech terms. WHY???

That's going to be a bit difficult to decide on then. Do you go for all the nice making of and other bits that collectors like so much, or stick to the best digital image that the purist searches for?

hm. If you have the money, you could get both I suppose, but there are so many!

basicly a superbit DVD doesnt waste any space for extras and stuff
so the movie can have super mega fantastical pisture and sound quality. Giving you the choice between both 5.1 and DTS sound...
even more basicly its a super dupa high quality DVD with no extras just the movie
and they cost more too
