In a moment of boredem I have comprised a potential world cup winning "dream team" of gaming heroes, who could set out to conquer the world of football (my god saturdays are slow):-

1. In goal it has to be MARIO. The ITalian plummer may seem pretty small when travelling through Marioland and facing the almighty Bowser, but in the real world he's a nice big fat guy with supreme diving skills (as seen in Mario 64). Also if he gets one of those mushrooms down him, he'll be huge and virtually impossible to put the ball past!

2. Bringing up the rear, possibly in a sweeper role would be MAX PAYNE. Not vastly experienced in the world of "Soccer", Max may not seem like an ideal choice for last line of defence. However, what he lacks in experience, he makes up for in "Bullet time"! How the oposition will get a shot past someone who can slow it down and swat it away as though it were a balloon is beyond me!

3. As part of the line in front of Max, we have STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN. Again, not too experienced - but as a hatchet man when you really want their star player crunching down and taken out of the game, what could be better than a "Stone Cold Stunner"?

4. As our central defender we have GILIUS THUNDERHEAD. This may be going back a bit, but those of you who remember "Golden Axe" will remember him as the dwarf. He may not have the height, but he's been thwarting evil on the scale of DEATH ADDER since before most of you were born and with an axe as big as that, there's no going past him!

5. Originally I wanted to instill a fear factor for the oposition to deal with. This spot had God's name all over it, but then putting the fear of God in people is not what it once was. So, in steps ANN ROBINSON. Be afraid, be very afraid!

6. In mid field we have someone who regaurds grass as somewhat of a second home. LINK has been up and down Hyrule field more time than I can imagine. He has an array of magic spells to asist him and with EPONA as his steed you know this is one character who will play to the end!

7. As our central man and Captain, we have non other than Captain JEAN LUC PICARD. He may be old, his knees may have gone but whether it be the silver screen, the small screen, or the computer screen, he always makes a superb captain. Who better to lead the men to victory than a man who won't give up even after having been assimilated by the BORG?

8. An unusual choice for a mid maybe? But RODNEY MULLEN (of THPS2 fame) can provide distractions like no other! His cunning freestyle trickery with a board at his feet can captivate audiences for hours! Just keep the ball away from him, he may become confused.

9. Starting the attack grid we have TIDUS, no not the fox, but the protagonist from FFX! His Blitzball skills will asure that he'll be good at working as part of a team, but this kid really shines in the pouring rain! When the others are slipping and falling everywere, Tidus will feel like his back on the blitzball pitch.

10. As our star striker we have SOLID SNAKE. He's a fairly nippy mover with good improvisational skills. However, its his stealth skills that have won him this spot - beating the off side trap has never been so easy.

11. Every team needs a star winger and the faster the better. SONIC may well be getting on a bit and still have a bit to learn about the sport, but ain't nobody gonna catch this hedgehog.
Providing this blue streak can be taught to cross the ball, he may just be the edge that they need!

Thoughts? Possible substitutions and reasons?

Pah! My team would kick your teams a$$!!!

All yours are old (and some dead), even if you take the updated SHAFT, he's still clocking up like 60 years or something!

Having said that, when your bunch of OAPs zimmer frame their way onto the pitch and find themselves up against polygonal and pixelated fictional characters, they could still be in with a chance.

Okay, pit your team of game characters against my team of detectives.

Manager: Taggart: He looked like Alex Ferguson, so he's in charge of this wily bunch.

Goalkeeper: Bergerac: Always seemed to be good with his hands - well, the ladies thought so.

Left back: Kojac: Who loves ya baby!

Right back: Quincy: You may think you can beat him, but he'll always get you in the end. And probably cut you open if you die.

Central defender: John Thaw: Depending on the game he'd either be a calm Morse, or Reagan from the Sweeney, and he wouldn't hesitate in talking you down.

Central Defender: Magnum: Flash, with a 'tache.

Midfield: Poirot: Lacking in pace, but a good football brain.

Midfield: Starsky: All action

Midfield: Hutch: If you've got Starsky, you NEED Hutch.

Forward: The guy from Hawaii 5-0: It might me a good omen.

Forward: Shaft: Who's the man?

Forward: Columbo: "Just one more thing...." then BANG! it's in the back of the net.

So come and have a go if you think you're hard enough.

Hmmm.... a truer word never spoken!

Well we could sub him at 70 minutes and shuffle the team around a bit, still I think they'd win most of their games.

Hmm... I still think Snakes stealth attributes are whats needed up front. That stealth camo is going to bewilder the poor linesmen, he coud just wait in the 6 yard box, being invisible, then as the ball is played through the linesman checks who the furthest man back is, sees a defender allows play to continue. Snakio turns the camo off, sends a tranquiliser dart into the keepers forhead and BOOM we're one - nil up!

The only downside to having Snake in the team is if that Mei Ling chick codec's him up mid game we're screwed.

Sonic should be up front. His ability to shoot the ball into the net as well as himself at the same time would be unstoppable.

Mario should be the midfield playmaker - cos everything this little fellow does is magical.

Lara Croft should be the midfield general and captain - she would bring to the team "two enormous assets": her exploratory runs into the opposition's territory, and the way she leads from the front.

Joanna Dark should the supersub striker - cos she certainly knows how to hit the target.
