It is like a Compact Flash card. Like you would use in an MP3 player or digital camera. Much higher capacity. Up to 1Gb I think now.
The adapter is to enable you to use an SD card with the GC. Was always planned, I remember it in the Gamecube previews.

Animal Crossing E+ will be the first game to use it, so you can plug the SD Card with save game data on it upto a PC and then send it someone else, anywhere across the world, via. an e-mail.
Imagine the possibillities... Nintendo would never need for Animal Crossing - or perhaps even any game - to go on-line...!
Plus, SD Cards can store so-much-more than even a Memory Card 251!
