As the levels progress so does the number and difficulty of these enemies, together with the number of available upgrades.
It's possible to save your progress too! Which is pretty good.

So far my record is Level 16
Does anyone know how to prevent losing all your converted troops (e.g archers, magicians, craftsmen) at the end of each level? I think I keep losing mine as I usually spend almost all of my money on fortifications, do I need to save about 10 grand for them to all be kept?

All I seem to be able to do is make some archer dude move out from the castle =\

That is awesome.
basically if you have somewhere around 20 archers you'll need to save around 5,000 - something around there - from the stage before in order to keep your men.
In other words, the troop upkeep must be carried over, if you spend all your money your troops are lost. Other than that build up around 100 magicians, then cast the convert spell together with the temple conversion to get a big wad of converted troops.
I have 250 archers, 100 magicians, 100 craftsmen and the upkeep is only 60,000. I have around 500,000 points at the end of each level and I spend down to 300,000 on fortifications, leaving enough to be sure for the troops.
EDIT - With the fortifications I have now wave after wave hit my walls to no effect.. and I can just leave each stage on, letting the archers do the work.
