Took the plunge recently (after that lovely price cut), and traeted myself to a PS2. I've noticed that it seems to have a problem playing DVD's that have a 16:9 widescreen format, namely that it ignores the widescreen and runs it full screen. This results in a somewhat stretched image, which makes people look taller and thinner than they should be.

Has anyone else experienced this, and is there a way to sort it out? I've tried the machine connected directly to a normal (i.e. not widescreen) TV via the standard connector, although I normally connect it through my video (which doesn't affect the DVDs when in standby mode).

Any help much appreciated!

The explanation how to do it is in the manual.

Insert a DVD and play.
Press select and choose setup.
Go to the picture menu and selet 4:3 letterbox.

Eject the DVD and reset (or turn off) the console.

Now when you play DVD's the picture should be widescreen with bars at the top and bottom - I had exactly the same problem.

If my instructions above don't work then check out the manual (I've written this from memory).

You're on the right track now anyway.

Works better with some games on a widescreen tv too if you change the screen setting.
