The Controller is very important in the gaming industry, if it isnít comfortable to hold or easy to use then it could really affect you whilst youíre playing. So when it comes to designing a controller it is important to get it right, the Gamecube controller I know went through many stages and testing to get it just right. A controller is made up of buttons to jump and shoot etcÖ and one or two analogue sticks to move a character and sometimes the camera.

But surly the controller can do much more than this? Lets look at the analogue stick, is itís only use to move a character or camera? What about oars on a boat? When you play a sailing game could the analogue stick be designed to move the oars on the boat more realistically like an arm? Perhaps a first person boxing game could be made an two analogue stick could be used as an arm and depending how and how fast you move the analogue stick will depend how hard you hit and how you hit, be it an uppercut or a short jab. These analogue ideas could be implemented into International track or field.

Now how about a racing game, these games appear a lot in the gaming industry and they way they work tends to mean holding a button down to accelerate and using the analogue stick to move the vehicle. Now there is two analogue sticks though could one be used as a sort of gear stick? By holding one of the analogue sticks hard up you go faster, letting it slack a little could slow you down and by letting it go back to the centre could stop the vehicle pushing it back would make it reverse. The other analogue stick would of course be used to turn the vehicle. Now this would be useful as I find the reversing method in racing games to be a bit annoying as I have to switch buttons to do so, this could be much more simple.

I also started thinking about what other sort of buttons could be added to a controller? Well when I first saw the Gamecube controller I thought the L and R buttons had been replaced by small wheels that spin. I was later proved wrong but would this be such a bad idea? It would make a much more easy way to switch through weapons for example and certain games could implement the wheel in certain areas perhaps in a mini game. Fiddling with what the controller can do has been increased as of late with the Gameboy Advanced being used as a controller for Kirby Tilt and Tumble on the Gamecube. By plugging in the GBAís version of Tilt and Tumble you can literally move the Gameboy Advanced and tilt Kirby on the screen. This is a very good idea, one sad thing that has happened to the controller though is the disappearance of the underneath Z button in the next generation consoles. It gave the impression of a real gun and with the new wireless technology being implemented could it be possible to sue a controller as a light gun? Now if this is possible the underneath button could make a welcome return.

So there you go, my ideas about the controller have you got any? Go on lets share ideas and hope that designers around the world are thinking up new ideas such as this to add variation in our game playing.

This place is always dead, I don't know what it is but it has something eerie about the place that scares people off, along with Long Intresting and Amusing Stories thread. The best place will always be FOG Chat, when entering FOG Prime you get that feeling of insecurtiy and awareness. It's hard to explain but you represent FOG Chat with bright colours but then they fade to greys and alike when you enter Prime.
