Hey, just doing some research.

This is just research at the moment but...

I was looking at Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, and the packs come with varying numbers of CALs (Client Access Licence apparently). I want to run a big Win2k server, will i have to buy win2k for every PC? And what are these CAL things? I know it might seem ridiculous but it needs to be kosher so copies are out of the question.

Windows servers are good to get you going, help you to figure out how things work, once you know how it should work you can tackle unix server, personnally i'd bin linux and get yourself solaris from the sun website, its free and theres the same software for it as linux plus suns own.

I don't know a loads about unix's, but I taught myself what I do know on solaris, I got it setup to do dns, proxying, webserving, smtp and samba (which is useful to intergrate unix with windows, so you can share file and stuff).

I'd give it a go as its free, its only a couple of gig download:-)

Cheers everyone, this is just research really. I've been using a Windows NT 4 Server on my work experience and its really cool, they're really easy and everything. I just was looking at the cost of setting up a network in an office (not huge).

2000 servers are good for internal stuff (file shares, dhcp, etc) but for external use linux/unix and apache with php and mysql.

Here goes...from memory this is how it works

CAL is a client access licence, you need a cal for each machine client machine that will connect to your server (win95,98,me,2k,xp....).

There are two modes for this Per Server and Per Seat

Per server:
You need a CAL for each connection to your server, if you are going to have 10 computers connect to your server simultaniously you need 10 CAL's, if you are going to have 100 computers connect to your server, but only 10 at a time then you only need 10 CAL's. This is just based on number of simultanious connections.

If you have another server you need extra CAL's for that server, but thats stupid, see below

Per Seat:
You need one CAL for each Client, thats it, that client can then connect to any of your servers in per seat mode.

There is different licencing for a webserver, you should check out microsoft's website for more information on licencing and it works differently for IIS, SQL and Exchange to mention just a few, if Apache will do what you need then use it as its nice and free.

Hope this helps, MS licencing is confusing at the best of times, it gets worse from here. Good luck
