My dads review.

Around the launch date of PS2 EA Sports released a Formula 1 title by the name of ëF1 Championship Season 2000í. Not only did this game have out of date stats but it was also flawed and did the PS2 and EA no justice. Later the next year, 2001, Studio Liverpool a SCEE company released a cracking number by the name of ëFormula 1 2001í. Not only was this game titled ëbest f1 game everí, but it also showed off the most advanced AI up to date. So EA had their work cut out to release a new title that could not only make people forget about their first poor effort but also take the crown of best F1 game. So EA released this, ëF1 2001í a game with a very similar name to Studio Liverpoolís but oh so different when it comes to graphics and game play.
When you first load up this game your greeted by a nice little intro FMV that is accompanied by music from ëChicaneí. The FMV along with the music puts you into an F1 mood and makes you feel ready to experience F1 2001. Once the game loads most gamers would start a race with damage and failures on so you can experience the F1 scene straight away. Well if you did that on this game then you would probably just fly off at every corner and lose the other cars and become very frustrated indeed. Because of this EA has introduced a nice little feature called ëF1 challengeí. This mode is rather like the license tests on ëGT3í. You have to start off with ëbasicí tests where you have to complete tasks such as cornering and braking. Once you completed these you can now enter a single GP. But how do you switch on weather and race a full championship with damage and failures on? Well, the answer is you have to complete more tasks. Each task unlocks a new feature. To unlock the damage option you have to complete a challenge that sees you driving around a third of Monaco without a front wing. You have to get back to the pits in a certain time without crashing. Complete this and youíve unlocked damage! Unlocking new things is not just the only thing challenge mode offers. It is a great way to practice while being good fun at the same time.
So youíve finally unlocked all the options, now itís time to start a championship or alternatively you could just make your own up by choosing ëcustom championshipí. If your not satisfied with that you could enter ëteam-mate challengeí were you have to beat your team-mate, or ëdominationí where you have to win every race. So youíve selected your mode and now itís time to race.
Races are introduced by ëJim Rosenthalí who gives out facts about racers and the circuit that flow together and add greatly to the atmosphere. After this you can choose your type of handling. ëNormalí is like a real F1 car with ABS and TCS but choose ësimulationí and you loose these assists and handling is very challenging but gives you a more satisfactory feeling in the end. When you finally start practice you can experience the graphics and handling properly for the first time. Handling is spot on and the graphics really are superb. Reflections are the best I have ever seen and replays are honestly as stunning as ëGT3í. All the cars are displayed in stunning detail with sponsors all accurate to the last race before the games release (Indianapolis)
When you start the race the camera pans around your car. EA has done a first with this. Animated pit babes and pit crew surround the car while you can rev the engine. Itís so realistic! After this the race starts. There is such a great feeling when all the cars fly off the grid. Some leave clouds of smoke from tyres while others scream away, engines full revs. During the race yellow flags wave as cars spin out and pick up failures. If you receive one of many failures (Oil leaks, engine blows ECT.) you must drive with dear care. During the race you can change the camera and if you are in the inside view during a roll the camera fuzzes out as the car hits the floor!
Its' detail like this that makes ëf1 2001í special. Highly recommended.

This game does not look too bad, the graphics are good and gameplay too. But it seems a little of the same old same old, and i got bored of them after the first 4.

There are many other games that have got my attention at the moment.

I cant see the point of having 2 F1 games, even though they are virtually the same!!Same tracks, same drivers etc
