In fact Taxi was a supurb french comedy, falling into that elite group of classic films that never really made it in this country, generally because of the lack of a hollywood hype machine backing them, or because people just don't like subtitles (too much like a book?).
What attention was given to the original quickly turned into very positive reviews, but the film went largely un-noticed by the public.
Taxi 2 hit the cinemas earlier this year. Maybe hit is too strong, Taxi 2 tepidly fell into the cinemas, again without any real recognition. Many of those who did want to see it, mysef included, couldn't even get to a cinema that was showing it. Thus i'm going purely on reputation and expectations when buying the sequel on it's imminant release on DVD (including right here, SR 13th Oct, 20 pounds - not cheap, but i'm definitely going for it).
Of course, many sequels flop disasterously, relying on their reputation instead of content (the obvious example being the Blair Witch Project 2), but if Taxi 2 goes that way, it's likely to sell about 3 copies, to me and another couple of fools. Hence it wouldn't even have been released? Well, maybe - there are some dire films available on dvd. But if you've seen the original, you'll know that it's almost certain to be great, and if you're not convinced, i'll put up a review for you after i've seen it.
If you've not seen the original, you really, really should give it a chance. When you do, i know you'll be desperate to get hold of Taxi 2 too. Watch this space.
