Less than 2 weeks now till one of my all time favourite series appears on DVD on 22nd October.

Robin of Sherwood is an excellent version of the classic Robin Hood legend. Starring Michael Praed (and later replaced by Jason Connery) Robin of Sherwood was based on the origins of the outlaw with a celtic twist.

The story contains the same formula as many Robin Hood stories that went before and came afterwards, but it deals with many more supernatural elements of Robin's life. Herne the Hunter, a spirit of the forest, guides the young Robin and his new found followers on their exciting path to rid England of the evil tyranny of rich kings and merchants who were only concerned with making more money at the expense of others. Chief among these was the Sheriff of Nottingham and his cowardly assistant Guy of Gisburne
, who tried and failed to thwart Robin's attempts at giving the poor villagers a better life. Their one hope being that King John will eventually return from the crusades to right all the Sheriffís wrongs.

This version is far darker and grittier than the Kevin Costner Hollywood film that appeared later on and every effort is made to give it an authentic feel. The music, by Clannad, helped to give the series a mysterious feel and some of the best stories (later on in series 2) involved devil worship and possessed swords. Of course, no Robin Hood tale is complete without a Lady Marion, and this one has a pretty feisty Marion at that, willing to help out at every opportunity after being rescued by a besotted Robin.

The stories got stronger as the series went on and the characters were fleshed out to become much more realistic than they had ever been before. The first DVDs to be released will be the Season One box set and the individual DVD discs (3 for the first season) for those that canít afford them all at once.

Be prepared to be stunned by this great series. It may not have had the production values of the Costner film, but it made up for it in story and pure class.

The thing is that this is about the only decent thing Praed has been in, and the only decent piece of acting I've seen from him too.

Jason Connery wasn't bad (I guess he had a lot to live up to, what with a famous dad like Sean) but Michael Praed seemed right for the part somehow.

I remember watching the TV show on a Saturday afternoon, and the big fuss when they changed the Robin!

I think it was commissioned by one of the ITV franchises originally, so don't expect a massive budget, but it does have a more down to earth feel. The added mystical bits really add to it though.

Blood and Demons!?

Cool!

Count me in, I'll go and get it I think.

I also want the GodFather Special Edition Bonus Extra Stuff Version, but I think I'll need a mortgage to buy it!

So that's how many people interested then?!

Come on, I've got to get a few people interested in this, even if you've never seen it before and want to see how the Robin Hood story really should be handled...

(there's lots of blood and demons too!)
