Well I'm struggling to think of a single leading enemy from a game that genuinely unnerved me. I realize that computer games are all about enjoyment, fun, and that fear is a tricky emotion to generate in the player, but I think it is one aspect of RPG and Adventure games that is lacking.
Yes, there have been scarey moments that have made me jump, but the main enemy, the central so-called evil character, is almost always weak and wishy-washy - usually resulting in them being either annoying or comical.
So my answer to the initial question is NO.
Maybe games developers hold back in this area through fear of censorship? Or perhaps they don't want to project the stuff of nightmares onto younger players?
Does anyone know of a truly dark and evil main enemy? I can't think of one. Maybe I've not played the right games. - Where's Darth Vadar when you need him?
I'm gonna have to force my mate to get it for his PS2 so that I can play it!
:)
shocking stuff and I luv it :-)
Ever noticed that the final battle between you and the end boss always requires you to kill him differently, i.e shoot him into a pool of lava, impale him onto spikes, send him through a time portal, use some one off special magic power to destroy him, shooting the surroundigs to encave him etc...
We never seem to finish the final encounter with 'conventional methods'. Dosn't seem as satisfying does it.
Anyway back to the point......
The main boss of a game is like a WWF match, extremely hyped up so when it's over you're like "Is that it?" I suppose it's to leave you wanting more..
You go into the future to see just how he ruined the world, and you're forced to face him at one point in the game, and you lose the main character in the game!
You can get him back, but the fact that he's already beaten you does make facing him that little bit more nerve-wracking.
They all seem to be ones you don't like through cut scenes but don't really care because they seem beatable.
Gannondorf on Zelda 64 was good boss and you saw what he'd done to Hyrule but you didn't really tremble at the sight of him, you more just saw him as the next digital goof you have to beat up.
To make bosses more fearful, perhaps they can beat you up during the game.
For instance, you fight them in some levels but you always lose to them becuase they're impossible to beat.
Now when you have to fight them, you will be nervous.
