The one that Started it all off is the famous hairy ape himself- Donkey Kong (Meaning Silly Ape in Japanese) Miyamotoís arcade debut of Mario or ëJumpmaní was a huge profit for Nintendo and hugely entertaining nonetheless. The beastly Donkey Kong has Pauline in his clutches, yes thatís right, ëPauline, heh heh, original names I know, but this too was an early name for Princess Daisy Toadstool and it's up to Mario to stand up to the big ape to get her back. The start of many heroics!!!
There are three levels, each consisting of a construction site. In the first level, Mario must work his way through sloping girders and up ladders to reach the top. Donkey Kong tosses down barrels at Mario, so he must either jump over them or he can use a hammer to smash them. In Level 2, Mario rides lifts and avoids fireballs to reach the highest point. Level 3 has Mario try to unbolt the metal to send Donkey Kong falling. Fireballs try to cook him, but Mario can use the trusty hammer to destroy them. However, while he's using the hammer, he can't jump, and that could be deadly. Wooo! It is different to what was to later come, but heck, it was a start of an era of wonderfulness. Now who could disagree?
Then after silly DK Sequels, the start of the platformís begins to materialise. Not hugely entertaining but It was Mario on his own with his brother.
The Title?ÖMario Bros of course.
Lookalike Brother Luigi teams up with Mario for the first time in Mario Bros, a non-scrolling, infinite level platform game. Mario can hit enemies from underneath to flip them over, then merely touch them to get rid of them completely. The POW Block, when hit on the bottom, will flip over every enemy touching a platform. Mario starts out with 2 lives in reserve, earning another after his first 20,000 points.
But really the fun dwindles, the repetitive nature disintegrates with the player throwing the Controller down in boredom.
Which Brings it on to:
Super Mario Bros.
And really the start of the forever ëBowser kidnap Daisy Toadstoolí but Fun all the same. Bowser Koopa for the first time has kidnapped Princess Toadstool of the Mushroom Kingdom and Mario and Luigi have to save her. Get through 8 worlds of 4 stages, each with their own layout and enemies, fighting Bowser over and over again until the final showdown. Now this is really the start of Addictiveness. By NES standards in the early days, the graphics where pretty great, colourful and bright. Everything is easy to see, and Mario and Luigi are nice and big, at least when they've grown from getting a Super Mushroom. In them days this game was the firsr game for many coming bundled with the and guaranteeing that if you pick up a controller you will have fun. And the joy of hearing the classic Mario music and sound effects are inspiring and great. Might not sound like much to non-gamers and fans, but to Mario fans, this is the sound that immediately provokes fond memories of stomping Goombas and hurling fireballs. But then the fun was to increase, it was the start of the odd ball of the series:
Super Mario Bros 2
Well In terms of Mario games the plot is hugely original if not a little strange. Iíll always remember reading my games manual of the title and it went something like this:
îMario was climbing up some stairs in a dream. He found a door at the top, and when he opened it, he found a whole new world in front of him, and he heard a voice calling for help to be freed from a spell. After awakening, Mario visited a nearby cave only to find exactly what he saw in his dreamÖ
Super Mario Bros 2 moves away from the type of platform gameplay set by Super Mario Bros. Yes the game is a sidescroller, but the action doesn't involve jumping on enemies and killing them, or lots of jumping from platform to platform with power ups scattered around every corner. Super Mario Bros. 2 works in a completely different manner. Jumping is still a main part of the gameplay, executed with the A button, but it doesn't play the part that it did in the first of the series. The B button, on the other hand, picks up things that are under your character. There are plenty of red plants jutting out of the ground, which you can uproot using the B button and you will usually find some sort of onion-looking vegetable in different sizes to throw at enemies. Also from the roots, you can find bombs to blow things up, or you can find a potion that will send you to an alternate backwards dimension where you can find a mushroom to restore energy, or coins that will give you credit to do a slot machine bonus game at the end of the level. You can also pick up certain enemies and throw them at other enemies.
It is a wonderful game and when the first time you play it, it does surprise you. The levels in the game are set up into levels and sublevels. There are six levels total in the game, and each level has three sublevels. At the end of the first and second sublevels, you will find a Birdo (now made famous again by being included in Mario Tennis) who will shoot eggs at you and of course Bowser is absent. You have to jump on the projectile eggs so you can pick them up and throw them at the Birdo. After hitting it numerous times, it will die, and the exit to the level in the form of the mouth of some bird will open. At the end of the third sublevel you will find a boss, to which you will have to use special strategies to defeat. Weird for Mario? You bet it is.
SMB2 offered different characters for you to play as at the start of each level with different positive and negative attributes. Mario is the best all-around character to choose, just like Mario Kart. Luigi is the fastest runner and the best jumper of the group. Toad is small in size and the quickest at picking things up. Princess Daisy Toadstool has the ability to glide for a short period of time by holding A. Different characters have advantages at different levels that you will visit. Fascinating. The sound effects are still recognizable by many ears to this day. For old nostalgic viewers of some of the classic Mario television series, you may remember some of the sound effects from the show coming from this game. Wackaday anyone? Timmy Mallet, Tommy Boyd? No?Öahh well.
Naturally Super Mario Bros. 2, gameplay-wise, is surpassed in every way by Super Mario Bros. I really don't know what Nintendo and Miyamoto were thinking when they decided to change the formula that created a console. But it was an idea called Doki Doki panic that started it off with Mario Characters being added to the game to satisfy the westerners.
Then the Gargantuan arrived:
Super Mario Bros 3.
The third adventure instalment to the Mario series for the NES was released two or three years after Super Mario Bros. 2.Appeared on numerous television shows and that film I think was called ëWizzkidí which starred the American teen from Wonder Years.
While SMB2 wasn't good enough to be better than SMB1, Super Mario Bros. 3 was bound to be the best out of the first three games. Mario and Luigi face more problems, more enemies, more danger and more fun in this game. Once again, Bowser has kidnapped Princess Toadstool. This time he has not only sent his army of Koopa Troopas, Goombas and other menaces to keep Mario and Luigi from saving the Princess, but he has sent out his seven Koopa Kids to duke it out with the plumber brothers. Bowser has also transformed the seven Kings into another form of creature, and to save these Kings, Mario and Luigi need to obtain the wands from the Koopa Kids before it's too late, and before the brothers can battle the King of the Koopas, Bowser himself and subsequently save the Princess herself.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is definitely one of the best ever made for the NES. It succeeds in surpassing SMB1's controls in every way and one-ups Super Mario Bros 2's also. There is no 'floating' or any long jump features in this game, like there was in SMB2. This is just the plain, original Mario environment with some new power-ups.
These power-ups include the raccoon, frog and hammer suits that give Mario special new powers. Also, the Fire Flowers are back and Mario can shoot fireballs if he grabs one, just like in the original game. Mario can also fly in this game, but only for a short period of time and you need to get a good lift-off before attempting to fly (meaning you need a good range of flat land to run before lifting off).
The levels in SMB3 are separated by worlds, like the original, only this time you get to choose what level you want to go to instead of just going through all of them one by one, in order (of course, you can only choose to re-play a level that you have already beaten). In addition, the game includes several mini-games to play. These include a game where you pick one out of three treasure chests and take the prize inside of it, another is a memory game and yet another is a mini-battle against small enemies. Every world includes one castle and one boss, and every time you beat a boss (which are the seven Koopa Kids), you save one King from deformation.
The sprites have smoother outlines than in SMB1, but about the same as SMB2's. The colours in this game look better than in SMB2's, there are more of them and most are cheerful. Some things also shine in the game just to show off some of the NES's powers. Also, the environments in the game help, whether it be sunny or icy, it's very noticeable and adds a lot to this department.
But gamers shouted out for more and yes they got it! With the Next Gen console coming onto the market it was the era of the Super Nintendo packaged with, get this:
Super Mario World (Super Mario Bros 4)
After the exploits of Mario and Luigi in Super Mario Bros 3 the story moves on. Now the princess is free from the clutches of Bowser. So now what do they do? They go to Dinosaur Land! Mario, Luigi, and Princess decide they are tired of the pesky Bowser so they take a brake. All is fine until...surprise surprise King Bowser Koopa kidnaps Toadstool in an act of revenge. Now of course Mario couldn't let that giant lizard kidnap his one true love so he sets out on his own journey. And maybe the greatest of the 2D Mario platformers. In Digitiser CH4ís opinion- The Best game of all time. And the last Outing for Mario Bros on the 2D Setting.
This is where also the green Dinosaur Yoshi makes an appearance He offers Mario a ride and instantly Mario history is made. Luigi tags along behind occasionally helping when Mario needs a brake. So with Mario's cape, Yoshi and tons baddies....This is a plot like nothing else.
The Koopa Kids make a return from Mario Bros 3 as do many of the favourites.
Mario of course is back with flying capabilities, with his feather. The original Fire Flower is here. A Puff Balloon that makes Mario inflate is here. But one of the most important is the keys that you find in worlds.
Mario looks his best in this game compared to the visuals of the other 2D outings. Some might say he even looks better in this game than he does in SM64. Silly people. It has one of the best looking graphics of the system. All characters are smooth and cartoonish (but not to childish) as with the series.
So while Mario upgrades from 8 bit to 16 bit....there is bound to be something different. That is why I think they wanted to keep it as close to SMB3. But with sticking to it's previous titles....it lacks originality. But is is a Mario 2D Game after all and one that people never got tired off, which of course gives the excuse to re-release it on GBA.
But then something else happened 5 years down the line a Groundbreaker arrived, which had many developers quaking in their boots. Indeed, many where thought to have went back and re-developed their games that still fell short of it. The upgrading again from 16 bit to 64.
It Being?:
Super Mario 64
Fans became just satisfied with brick smashing, Goomba stomping, fireball throwing.
Nintendo always had an advantage over its competitors, but again, no one really knew about it until they experienced it themselves. The Nintendo 64 was a powerful machine and Mario would just demonstrate how powerful it really is.
Way before Dual Shock 2, Nintendo released their system with an analog controller. Hmm... interesting, but what does it exactly do for this game? Well, the analog stick is very sensitive. If you lightly touched it, Mario would slowly tip-toe. Push it a bit harder and he's walking. Push the stick to its fullest, and Mario's running for his life here. And because you could turn the stick 360 degrees, Mario could move that way too. But wait, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks (something like that). Instead of just jumping, Mario can punch, kick, slide, wall-kick, somersault, backflip, fly, swim, and the list just goes on. He could do everything we can, even stuff we can't do.
Mario 64 was a whole new world, and of course, a whole new adventure in the series. So what's the story? ; ) heh heh Same as always YET AGAIN, to rescue the princess. Yes, Princess Toadstool, except she has officially adopted her Japanese name, Peach. And Bowser didn't kidnap Toad either, he just imprisoned him in a wall, funny yes as he has an annoying little twirp. Bowser also steals the stars to gain power, and it's your job to get them back.
Of course, Mario did learn a few new tricks in addition to all his cool acrobatics. To fight Bowser, Mario has to grab him by the tail and throw him into a bomb. With the analog stick, you spin it and Mario spins that way. Spin the stick faster, and he'll swing Bowser faster. You just have to swing him into a bomb.
But Mario can't just get to Bowser that easily. He'll need to unlock some magical doors, sealed by the stars' power to get to him. Mario must travel through 15 worlds (by jumping through paintings) to get stars and watching them ripple was unbelievable to say the least. In each world, there are quests he must accomplish to find a star. But no one ever said it was easy. Each world has a variety of great enemies, and some are harder to kill than others. And of course, there are some people that try to help Mario. They can prepare a cannon for you or carry you through treacherous terrain. Some familiar faces return while others meet Mario for the first time.
Of course, Mario has some new items to help him. He has a wing hat to fly, a metal hat to become invincible resembling Terminator 2000 and sink to the bottom of an ocean with it, and an invisible cap to make him invisible and pass through certain walls. But what?ÖNo Fire Flowers! Most Mario games where two playered too, but this one isn't. Luigi doesn't even make an appearance! Instead, Mario's green dinosaur pal does but only at the end. Furthermore, there are few bricks to smash, and few question blocks! Most of the classic items aren't in this game, and Mario surfs on a koopa shell rather than kicking it. And what ever happened to Bowser's kids? Donít Worry though as this is Marrioís best outing, considering classic elements have been removed.
A worthy addition with the spruced 3D visuals is the sound. Mario makes all his lovable sounds with even a few voices. The soundtrack is also great accompanying a rubbery face to play with on the title screen, which will be one to always remember.
Mario fans rejoice! If the death of your soon to be N64 has you disappointed of titles to come, then there's no need to cry and donít fret. A title that will expand the series further is in production on the Gamecube, givin the working title of: Mario Sunshine. Screens suggest an update of Mario 64. But itís playing the game that is going to count and it wouldnít be a Mario Title if it wouldnít be out of this world.
Thanks for reading.
And one thing I forgot to mention, what about Mario's hat?
It was put on his head so it would make the plumber easier to draw and animate on-screen.
But I can't imagine him without it though.
Anyway, despite what many think, I'd say Mario is the best video game character of all. Much better than Sonic. Or Miss Croft.
The key to his success: he's UNCOOL. If you're never really "in", and can never really be "out" - if you know what I mean....
You should of really posted this in Nitnendo forum but a classic post all the same!
Paper Mario rocks and Mario party 3 will rock as for Dr Mario 64 though...
