Square Pictures fantastic movie, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, is only a few months away from making it onto DVD. This fully computer generated movie is a masterpiece in terms of visuals, making it the perfect choice for conversion onto DVD. However, in these modern times, no DVD is complete without a nice selection of special features, which certainly isn`t a problem for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, which boasts a very impressive line up of special extras.

Anybody who owns DVDs such as Fight Club, Seven and Snatch will know that when you see a DVD arriving in a double disc box set, you can expect to see a nice selection of extras. Final Fantasy will be no exception. Its set to be packaged on two DVDs, giving it plenty of space to pack all those extras on board!

One of the main attractions is the audio commentary. A feature that has become increasingly popular, commentary can be found on most of the high budget movie to DVD conversions. There are two commentaries with Final Fantasy, both by various key members who played behind the scenes roles in the movie (as did everyone). Voices you hear include those of the sequence supervisors, the editor, and a few other important people. Obviously, as the creators are Japanese, it follows that the language is the same, but fortunately there are subtitles to rescue you from rapid dictionary use! Both commentaries are exceptionally informative, especially when discussing the CG work that was the main basis for the entire movie.

A unique feature found on the DVDs is a "Groundforce" style version of the movie, where you get to actually watch the individual scenes get built from story boards up to fully finished scenes. The mixture allows a great insight into the work that has to be done for this kind of movie! This is fairly similar to "The Gray Project", a feature found later on that again shows you production of individual scenes from their most basic elements.

As with most other movies on DVD, there are numerous trailers, but rather than just showing the Final Fantasy movies, there are also trailers for other Columbia Tri Star productions, and most excitingly, a trailer for Final Fantasy X! Shoot over to ukps2.com to find out more about next summer`s huge PS2 game!

Perfecting the discs is an awesome menu display that looks as if it is taken from a location in the movie. The transparency of the "console" allows fantastic glimpse of the planet behind, and a beautiful view it is! On top of that, the layout is set so futuristically, it would easily rival Star Trek.

Another popular feature amongst modern DVDs are Documentaries usually entitled "The making of...". This DVD is no exception, and possesses an excellent documentary discussing production of the movie. An interesting twist to this feature is that it is actually branching. Midway through, you`ll actually be asked to select which topic you`d like to cover next, giving a more interactive feel!

There are also numerous features discussing people, and objects in the movie. Seven character profiles, and three vehicle comparisons to real life counter parts comprise this section making it a brief, but highly valuable addition. Apart from a smaller budget, what would the movie have gained without characters?

An interesting, though admittedly over-hyped feature is the "Final Fantasy Shuffler" which allows you to "create your own" shots from the court room scene. Its the kind of thing, you can sit down and play about with for a while, which all adds to the fun!

For the more artistic veiwers, there are also galleries and explanations of some of the art used in the movie. With visuals like those seen in the movie, this should be nothing short of stunning! On a similar note, there are complete compositions of some objects found in the movie, showing how certain things were created layer by layer.

One of the most amusing features is a set of joke out-takes, constructed in rough CG. They are actually very funny, and its nice to see it isn`t all about "How we did this..." and "What we did there". They took the time to accomodate every kind of viewer!

For an informative deleted scene, there is an original opening sequence. This shows the progression in the CG mastery of the creators. The increase in quality is truly impressive, whilst also offering you a chance to see some deleted footage! Also, there is a clever little sequence that will help those of you like me, who have a tendency to lose the plot everytime it thickens. There is a feature that pulls together all the various parts of Aki`s dream If you couldn`t quite follow it during the movie, then this extra should clear up all your uncertainties!

Finally, in one of the more amusing features, there is a link taking you to a special website, containing some behind the scenes footage, and more importantly, a cool "Thriller" music video, starring Aki (who dances), other cast, and even some phantoms. Whilst it may sound a little silly, it was intended to have a humourus side, so enjoy it!

With extras of both this quantity AND quality, it hardly matters if you even like the movie! The DVD is still worth the price, and should hopefully be available in the UK early next year.

Thanks Wookiee :-) I was looking at having to spend £22 on The Phantom Menace, but thanks to SR`s excellent competition and generosity, I can save it for uni. (Before it gets suggested, that doesn`t mean drink, as I`m a complete non-drinker).

I think I`m just easily impressed by lots of pretty visuals and extra stuff to do. I`m not bothered about highly complex plots and crafty stories. Its too much brain work.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within doesn't interest me to much. I went to see it in the cinema, and as much as I was overwelmed by the visual quality, the plot wasn't exactly brilliant. To be honest, I almost dosed off.

Rush Hour 2 woke me up though.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
