Two discs, around ten hours of footage, interviews, behind the scenes, deleted scenes, commentary...oooooh baby.
I personally wasn't all that hyped up when the Phantom Menace was released over here despite being a massive fan of the original trilogy.
For some reason though, since the announcement of the DVD release I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.
At night, laying there, dreaming of wonderful DVD picture and amazing sound.
Those extra features, George Lucas talking us through the film and let's not forget that there was a time that we thought Mr.Lucas was going to delay a DVD release until ALL of the three new films had been completed.
My prediction is that this will be (without question) the biggest selling DVD so far. By Xmas it'll be a record-breaker and not a single DVD player owning Star Wars fan in the land shall be without a copy.
Ah, a mere six days remain until that glorious event on the 15th day of the tenth month in the year 2001.
I'd even bet that one or two people may well pull a sickie just to stay at home....
I haven't had a chance to look at it at the moment though, will most likely do that this weekend, along with getting round to watching *deep breath* True Lies, Anti-trust, Total Recall and The Corruptor.
After the ridiculously successful original trilogy George Lucas had a huge job on his hands, but I don't think anyone was genuinly pleased with what he produced. Considering that Lucas' last major writing project was Return of the Jedi (1983) and that since then his output has consisted of writing Young Indiana Jones episodes and executive producing such 'classics' as Willow and Howard The Duck, this should have been a classic. He had SIXTEEN YEARS to write this film and the best he could come up with was Jar Jar Binks?!!!
Star Wars has become a religion over the past twenty years. Lucas owed it to the Star Wars followers to make this film good and he blew it -imagine if the second coming of Jesus Christ was that shoddy! People would turn away in droves.
While the plot and characters were terrible, the very worst thing about this film was the special effects. Lucas' obsession with CGI was the final nail in the Phantom Menaces' coffin. Lucas seemed to use the film as a showcase for Lucasarts (look we do land, space and underwater, we can do animals, characters and spacecraft, look we can do...) but unfortunatly he couldn't even pull that off convincingly. The underwater scenes are particularly bad and the effects of already aged far, far more than the original trilogy.
However, if you are a fan of the film then I can understand you getting excited about the extras that come with it-they do seem pretty impressive. I remember hearing a rumour that the DVD would include a version of the film with no special effects -I would love to see that but as it turns out I don't think it is even on there.
As for being a record-breaker... it may well be, but I think it'll face stiff competition from the T2 Ultimate Edition. That's one disc I simply *must* have.
