Here are a few ideas of games that I feel deserve a mention:
1) Super Mario 64
Ah yes, where would we be without this classic? The launch game for the N64 promised and delivered, with stunning gameplay and graphics that wowed us all and changed the way the gaming industry fuctioned. This game brought our Mario into a whole new perspective and the lush 3D worlds had you coming back for more. The replay value is excellent, you won't want to stop until you have all 120 stars and seen who's on the roof of the castle... Although now the graphics are a little behind to say, this game still has some of the best gameplay and replay value on the N64 and Mario is as playable as ever. A true classic.
2) Goldeneye
Another N64 classic that stretches back a long way, this shoot-em-up paved the way for many more to follow. This game stars James Bond, whom is undercover to try to stop the Goldeneye satellite from shooting and desrtoying London. But when 006 goes missing reported dead, the mysteries begin to pile up...
You play as Bond through 20 huge levels and three difficulties, each with increasingly difficult AI and missions. You can also obtain cheats if you do the levels fast enough, prompting replay to get them all (including the sought after invincibliltiy). Sure there are codes for them, but nothing beats the feeling of getting that cheat you have been after for ages on your own (ah yes! I own this game! You shoout as you get Invincibility).
But thats not it. Where this game really shines is the multiplayer mode. There's a wide range of characters and weapons to choose from, and the levels are really well designed for deathmatches. There are plenty of varied gameplay options including the dreaded one hit knockout mode and a flag tag. Nothing beats shooting your mates for the 31st time in the back of the head after all :).
The graphics still look good even today, and the gameplay is so moreish you'll have to be surgically removed from your N64 after five minutes. A true masterpiece of a game, and the original Perfect Dark. 'Nuff saif.
3) Super Mario all stars
This SNES classic is still played by me even now! Basically it has got Mario Bros, The Lost Levels, Mario 2 And Mario 3 all on one cart. The difficulty curve is just perfect, and the ideas are innovative and original (just look at the Tanooki suit on Mario 3 and the idea of throwing around veggies in Mario 2). The games replay value is high, and some of the levels are monstrously difficult. Just play D-4 on Lost Levels and complete it first time, bet you can't do it :). All the games are huge, my fave has to be Mario 3 as the levels are totally original and you can fly. In all, all of these games are timeless classics and I hope to see them on GBA (Iheard a rumour about it).
4) Starwing
This game is the predecessor of Lylat Wars for the 64, and it was a revelutionary game back in its time.
Starwing was the first ever SNES game to be fully 3D. It used polygons and texture mapping, and for a SNES, wow was it impressive! The gameplay is fluent, the replay value is excellent and the fun you can have blowing up wierd dinosaur type things...! The graphics are impressive, and it really made you think about how powerful the machine was. A revelutionary game that paved the way for others to follow, and an all time classic.
5) Banjo-Kazooie
This game was the first game that truly showed Rares platform gaming abilities on the N64. They had to follow up Goldeneye with something good, so they came up with a bear and bird and wierd guy with a skull for a head. Wierd you may think. But ah. As that is where Rare specialises, turning a completely new idea into a stunning game that keeps you coming back for more. And Banjo doesn't disappoint there, with truly stunning visuals and fluid gameplay. The levels are huge and there is so much to do (you'll want to see the ending with all the jiggies). The bosses are rock hard and Grunty will keep you playing for a long time. The replay value is good too, as you'll want to get every note and jiggy to truly feel you have conquered the game (and trust me, that is no mean feat!). It is a shame that there is no multiplayer mode, but with a game as good as this, who cares? A masterpiece of its time and a worthy member in anyone's game collection.
6) Earthworm Jim 2
A massive improvement on the original and a classic game to boot. Shame the N64 version isn't up to much, nor the GBA one.
Basically this game stars a worm that has a supersuit that gives him super powers (duh!). He has to go around many levels trying to conquer the evil that Psycrow has bestowed on them, and try to get the Princess back. The game is incredibly funny and seems to feature cows a lot... A very wierd original game with great graphics and gameplay that keeps you interested right to the end. And as for the sub games... Bouncing bombs and puppies? Only Earthworm Jim could...
7) Mario kart
Surely this game requires no introduction. A classic on the SNES that revolutionised racing games forever. You can choose one of many Nintendo stars and drive around tracks to try to be the champ. A sharp difficulty curve, massive replay value and excellent multiplayer and variety or tracks and drivers ensured this games return to may a console ahead of it.
8) Yoshi's island
A SNES classic that had so many original ideas in it that it was totally unlike any otherplatformer seen in its time. It starred Yoshi, the green dinosaur, and he had to take baby Mario back to his parents. You had to travel through levels with Mario onyour back and when you got hit your Star meter would go down and you'd have to try to catch Mario as he floated aroundin a bubble. Let you meter reach 0 and Mario got carried off by shy guys and you had to start the level again. This game has replay value by the bucketload and you'll play it time and time again to see if you can get a perfect rank for all the levels and unlock the secret ones...:)
In all, a truly original platformer that I enjoyed muchly and would recommend to anyone. A timeless classic.
9) Doom (not strictly SNES but who cares!)
This long running game never seems to lose its charm, and the SNES version was no exception. You go around fragging great ugly monsters. Basically. Great fun, great graphics. Frag frag frag. Yippee!
AND FINALLY...
10) The original arcade games
Where would we be without these? These were the games that got the ball rolling in the first place. These were the games that amazed us way back in the 80's. These were the games that set the foundations for characters such as DK and his son, and Mario and his brother. Timeless classics that were the building blocks for things to come. Like the Gamecube now. Games such as Jumpman and DK junior (where you had to rescue DK and Mazza was a baddie!) are what we have to thank for what we have now. Timeless masterpieces we will always be grateful for.
Anyway, that should give you an idea of the sort of games I'm on about. Feel free to mention any game you like and we'll see what the all time best game from Nintendo is!
(My vote's with All Stars)
