Started ok, blah blah blah, head full of noise and didn't want to go to rehearsals.
But went anyway, always good to let the rock flow through you.
We started on a new song and had it basically nailed after an hour. Nothing like the feeling of knowing you pulled notes from your head and got them through instruments to come out like you intended them to...best high you can get mate.
So we're sitting there going over arrangements etc (well, they did whilst I sat and smoked, being a drummer excludes you from music talk) and Rob (bass) has his phone go off:
"Hello?...Hello mate!..yeah long time, tonight? Well we're rehearsing..yeah yeah..mushroom...sure, fantastic"
(rough transcript of phone call)
We all ask him who that was and he just shrugs "Couple of people I know, coming down to see me."
We're a bit not-happy about this, we're on a roll and don't have mates coming to rehearsals, but he just shrugs and says "It's ok, they'll be a laugh"
An hour later, new song run through about 8 times, the door opens and in walks his two mates.
I'm sitting there thinking "Who are you? Where do I know you from?...I know I know you..."
Rob introduces them "This is Dave and Andy" and we all shake hands, my boys are looking shocked.
And then it hits me, these two blokes are in Depeche Mode....
Depeche F*****g Mode are in our rehearsal room in deepest, darkest Chelmsford.
Turns out Rob used to be in a band called "Pepper Spray" that Depeche Mode were fans of and used to go watch play, and Rob used to play football with them every Tuesday.
They hadn't met up for almost a year and they were down in the area doing stuff and though they'd phone him up.
So what does a band do when Depeche Mode show up at a rehearsal?
We were running through the set, and these two blokes sat on the floor, smoked my fags and watched us do our set.
I was about 15ft off the floor...I've never been a massive fan of them, but for fun's sake, how often does something like this happen?????? You're running through the set you played in Islington last week and the singer and another bloke are tapping their feet and smoking your fags, watching you play....unbelievable.
So we run through the set, they've got about 30mins to kill and we all think of a song or two to do for fun.
Come up with "500 Miles" by The Proclaimers and "Enter Sandman" by Metallica.
I tell you, you have never had a more surreal moment that your band playing Metallica with some of Depeche Mode singing/playing guitar with you.
What an amazing, weird and perfect evening.
I love playing in my band like I can never explain.
All the crap of today forgotten in an instant.
And we're going down to London on Thursday to see their new studio and have a drink with them.
Life is fantastic, music is fantastic and I love being in Parker.
And I defy anyone to not sit there laughing hearing Parker singer and Dave Gahan singing "When I go out...well I know ahm gonna be...ahm gonna be the man who goes out next to youuuu"
We couldnt believe Bass-Bloke didn't say anything.
Our Saxophone player (and the back-end of the cow for the Holy Cow EP pics) is the nephew of Peter Green.
Which rocks, I want to meet him.
Odd evening, and now I'm at work doing presentations about Seasonal Fragrances.
Life is odd.
Was Dave Gahan acting reasonably sane, because I heard he was pretty screwed up for a while?
That's cool though, just rehearsing, when in walk Depeche Mode.
Other band members with celeb mates that never thought to mention it before. Excellent.
What next, will your lead guitarist reveal himself to be in line to the throne?
:-)
deepest darkest chelmsford - ahh essex, home
and have a great thursday night.
We were like "Rob, why the fun didnt you tell us you knew those guys????"
"Well...it didnt seem important, it's not like we'll support them or anything"
But jesus, what an experience to tell the kids/
Depeche Mode!!!
I want to be in a band too!
