When you go over a banana do you stop still and spin (like SNES) or do you spin and still move (like N64) ?

I only have 2 * ratings so far so it looks like I will have to practice alot more If I ever want to get to a *** rateing. hopefully a lot less time than it took me to finish diddy kong racing but longer than it took me to finnish mario kart 64 (took me a few days to finish the last one)

Some more you missed out:-

Collect as many coins as possible

Never use the Try Again option

Same with the mini Bowsers on Bowser Castle 4 and the crabs on the beach tracks. BTW I'll tell you how to get ***, seeing as no-one ele has it yet:
1) Do not go off the course or bang into the sides
(Special cup is a little lenient on this, but Mushroom cup is the hardest as you can't touch the sides at all or you get a **)
2) Do not fall off
(If you fall off on any cup your rank will NOT be ***)
3) Finish first in all races
(Also a must)

You spin and move but if you press B just after you collide with the banana (or any other thing that makes you spin) you will not spin and a musical note will appear above your head, but as B is the brake button you stop :(
