I'm rather disenchanted with Xbox Live, and once my PC arrives tomorrow I want to try out online gaming PC style. Admittedly my selection of games is limited at the moment, a stunning selection of the six I went and bought today;

*Delta Force Black Hawk Down
*Raven Shield
*Vietcong
*Angel Of Darkness
*Vice City
*Command And Conquer Generals

By my reckoning 4 of those are online. Does anyone know what the best service is ? I've read a bit about Gamespy Arcade, and picked up a leaflet for Game.net which is £24.99 a year.

Also, do people use voice chat and buy headphones/mics, or is it still mainly typing stuff with the keyboard ? Do all online gaming services provide support, or just certain games ?

You can probably tell by now I'm clueless at this, I've had tow PC's before but never tried online gaming, now I'm on Broadband with a decent modem/router and PC I figure it has to be better than Xbox Live.

Whoops, my mistake, it's actually called Desert Combat. Speaking of which, has anyone seen the new C130 for Desert Combat 0.38? It's bloody huge.

Quite allot of games have their own in built server browser, and to be honest I recommend using those instead of something like gamespy. It's not half as time consuming.

And while we're on the subject of online gaming, I couldn't recommend Battlefeild 1942 enough, it is my opinion, the only online game worth playing at the moment, and you can download free mods to play on it as well, like Desert Crisis and Eve of Destruction.

All Seeing Eye is good.
Gamespy is terrible, loads spyware onto your system and is a pain to delete. It's a resource hog and serves as nothing more than a lobby, dont use Gamespy.

Vietcong has an ingame server browser. Set your preferences, hit refresh and voila!
It's massively different to Xbox Live.

Gamespy arcade is a server browser, but really, in my opinion you'd be better off using the All seeing eye; http://www.udpsoft.com/eye/ . I don't think you'd be able to use it with Generals, bt should be able to wiht the first person shooters.
Game is basically a service where you can register, then download from and get involved in communty stuff from there, but is not necessary, and don't bother paying for it unless you decude it would be useful for you.

Mic's are commonly used in Half Life and mods, because the game has inbuilt support for them. I don't really know if this is true of the other games you mentioned, but I would imagine, that if not, if you decide to become involved in the clan scene you will run some kind of voice communication program, like Roger Wilco or Teamspeak in the background.

providing you have broadband, a lot of games these days have their own online client built in, for example red alert, alien vs predator, unreal etc.

don't know about the ones you listed, but I would say its a safe bet they have similar clients
