About a year ago, the PS2 was being released and their didn't seem to be a single thing that Sony couldn't do wrong.
Poorish software line up bar one or two neat games like SSX.
The Dreamcast was out performing most PS2 mostly.
It was expensive and all the machines had defects and faults.
It was clear that it would get blown away by any competition by other machines.
So the PS2 had a year headstart?
The Dreamcast had a years head start against the PS2 which didn't help it much.
Slowly but surely, the machine improved.
By the Summer, it could actually boast about a few decent titles.
Now, only being 200 quid, its actually well worth buying.
It's got plenty of good games out, plenty more to come and a reasonable promising future.
I still think that the Gamecube will be a better machine but it takes more than a few hardcore gamers such as my self to make a console a success.
Both the Xbox and Gamecube are half a year away from our shores.
With the PS2 being the only living console this christmas, with games like MGS2 alongside it, its bound to get a seriously consolidated position by the time the competition arrives.
So how come the PS2 made well out of a year while the Dreamcast didn't?
Well, during the Dreamcasts life time, Sony told everyone to wait and buy the PS2 with a heavy load of hype.
It worked. Most people waited for the PS2.
Now the PS2 has come and although Microsoft and Nintendo promise better, I don't think that it'll arrive soon enough to grab the people who've been waiting since the Dreamcast launch.
I think Digitisers Tony Mott feels along the same lines (see Channel 4 teletext page 481 this weekend).
My conclusion?
Sony are the luckiest gits around.
They got everything wrong except the timing and advertising and look set to eat up the console market.
Still, I've no doubt that the Gamecube will still sell more than enough to give Nintendo a tidy profit and keep third party devellopers interested enough to keep giving us games but Sony will have the lions share.
Bad news for Microsoft who are more or less directly competing with them...
YOu get to own a game company, and you have to deal with advertising, promotions, etc....
Its really good, and realistic too

Anyway, I'd hardly call the GC's launch in Japan a success either...
It was Semi Successful.
Bad timing mostly.
Although, the bad figures came from biggers store chains and it turns out that most went to get it at smaller street stores.
We'll know for sure when Nintendo publish the results.
I think that the Cube more or less sold out within a week which is good, if not as spectacular as the crowded stampedes of the PS2 and GBA launches.
