'Don't judge a book by it's front cover'

That's the old saying that they say but for me I went against this and saw the front cover of 'Men Of Honour'. The attarctive green cover with Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Juniors face printed acrross the front cover. Without hesitation I automatically had to rent it and that is something that I am glad I did.

The film shows the image of a hero, someone who never quit, never gave up and never failed. It shows just how powerful the human spirit can rise to achieve a goal no matter what you have to do to accomplish it.

Cuba Gooding Jr stars as a black famers son just after WW2. After troubles on the farm he leaves school to help his dad on the farm and ruins his chances of gaining an education. Then comes the day that not only changed his life but changed history.

As soon as you hear the words, 'Based On A True Story' then you get that awful feeling about what Hollywood will do to this and just how exagerated it really will be, and to be honest I didn't think any different of this film.

Although the film was an inspiration to all who watched it, you could still feel the Hollywood effect. The scenes were magnificent with Cuba and Robert giving the performaces of their lives and played their roles to the bone. From the beginning to the end we are shown more and more about what each character is really like and the feelings towards the blacks in the navy.

After being accpeted into the navy diving school after writing over one hundred letters he is finally accpeted, but destined to fail. The prejudice from his Master Chief (De Niro) and from the other divers puts a lot of pressure on him, although he is the best there.

You can feel how the film has been edited just like any other true story. And when all starts to look up for him, things suddenly change for the worse. I won't give too much of the storyline away as I might have already done so already but I can't express just how enjoyable this film really was.

I think it was the characters that made the film what it was and without De Niro and Gooding it wouldn't hae been anywhere near as enjoyable. The way they communicate with each other and play there roles was excellent and Gooding is really starting to show his real talent after 'Instinct' and 'Pearl Harbor'

This would be recommended to anyone who has any sense and loves those emotional, exciting and memorable films.

Men of Honour was corrupted by Hollywood and made into a film that was far too sentimental. Cuba Gooding Jnr and Robert De Nrio had both had far better films.
