Hi,

I am using an online backup service.

The uploads are going constantly at approximately 'full' speed, but I have noticed my download speeds being choked while the upload is in progress. If I pause the upload then the download speed recovers.

Is this 'as expected' ADSL behaviour?

A general rule for downloading across a network is that you need 10% of the download speed for upload, so the return ACK packets and such can be sent, So if you are downloading at 800Kbps then you need 80Kbps of upload bandwidth to ensure you maintain the download speed.

Basically I have seen several cases where this is true, and maintaining heavy upload usage will adversely effect your download speed.

We would always advise customers to limit how many actions they perform on their connection when uploading due to this.

To quote a intelligent man,

"When you transfer data using TCP (you will normally be using this on the net for file transfers, web browsing etc) it requests confirmation that the last lot of packets of data it has sent were received and ok. If these cannot be sent back to the person sending the data because your upstream bandwidth is saturated by your other uploads then this will cause your download to slow as the sending party needs to wait for confirmation before it will continue sending."

Might be an idea to cap the amount of bandwidth your client can use to upload.
