Initially disappointed when I found out that I was receiving this as one of my rentals (it was one that was low on my priority list…mainly as it was really being slated by all the reviews), when I did watch the film White Noise, I was overly impressed.
The story is based around the subject of EVP (those that are not familiar with the paranormal jargon, this is Electronic Voice Phenomena, where audio devices pick up voices that were not heard at the time of the recording, possibly being those of the dead) and of one man’s obsession of hearing from his dead partner, after being told about the phenomena from an EVP expert who had been receiving messages from her. Eventually he hears from her and soon after he receives messages from the future indicating people in danger, allowing him to save them. However, as the film progresses, the messages aren’t all what they seem and things escalate to a very interesting climax…
There are a few plot holes in the film and several points had me wondering what they were talking about. Some ideas aren’t well explained and I got lost on the occasional scene and wondered how it all fitted in with the storyline. But put these few holes aside and you do have a pretty sturdy storyline.
The use of science and technology in this kind of paranormal horror does well in informing people of the possibility of afterlife and with the inclusion of items easily obtainable (such as a tape recorder and a radio), shows how easy the gathering of evidence is. It also adds to the scare factor immensely as the way these items are introduced mean that you’ll never look at your sound system in the same way again. It is a refreshing change when movies actually do some homework on the subject! The film also uses television sets on static (it is the static (or white noise) of the radio that enables some of the voices to manifest on tape) to visually see some entities breaking through. As the film is fictional, I’ll allow them to add this fictional idea into the film, although I may have to introduce a small telly to my EVP kit, just out of interest…
After watching quite a few horror movies recently, this one sits quite highly amongst them as it is the first one in a long time to actually unnerve me (and occasionally make me jump!). Maybe I am more susceptible to this kind of thriller as it directly links into the more negative side of my hobby and warns of the dangers of meddling. However, I do think it is down to the script being well written. I guess I’ll let you decide!
Overall, the film is a decent thriller and well worth a watch. It provides a few jumps and the usual “what if…” feeling after watching. Worth a rent for the casual viewer, but a possible must-buy for any paranormal fanatic.

I've just had to do a quick wiki to refresh my memory of what it was about. It seems like it reviewed well so perhaps it's just me.
> Good review HM. I watched the film a while ago now and I enjoyed
> it. Don't bother with the sequel though.
