It’s all down to being in the right place at the right time. Also, you may need to do something you don’t really want to, sort of a means to an end.
I have a neighbour who is a DS in CID. He has only been doing it for a little while and has taken a job in the child protection unit, as it was the only CID post available. He will stay in his current job for a year or two and then, because he has that experience he will seem more “attractive” to the powers that be when he applies for the job he really wants.
That is one of the things that made me choose the police over the fire service, just the shire range of areas that you can go into.

Do you know how easy it is to get into the CID or dog handling after your preliminary 2 years 'on the beat'?
I was thinking of doing the 'Accelerated Promotion' thing after University- but I bet the competition is high for specialisations, isn't it?

It may interest you to know that I had another fitness test the other day.
And guess what…they have made it even easier.
Requirements now are:
A grip strength of at least 30kg.
A push strength of at least 35kg.
A pull strength of at least 36kg, yes that is 36 not a typo.
A bleep test to level 5.4!!!
While taking the test the instructor said the highest you will ever need is 10.2 for the armed response unit, so he said to get up to that and then stop. So that’s what I did.
I don’t know how long it is going to stay like that, it’s in experimental stages. But our instructor thinks the new test is a joke, and I have to agree.
